Well, the time has come in the life of every truck when the material that makes the "oh sh*t" pedal work, needs replacing, and I'm hoping to do this relatively soon (this weekend if I can manage it)

My question is what's the best brand of brake pad/shoe to get? And what price should I be looking at for these parts?

I've done a ring around and can get the front pads for ~$100 a set (so $200 to re-pad the front end) and they're a Bendix brand.

I've no idea, I'm hoping the collective (that's you!) can help me out here!

Cool, bendix it is! And the price is only $100-ish for the front set, which will do both sides, and the rear shoes are only $65 to do both sides. I assumed that a set would only do one CORNER of the vehicle, not both sides. Anyway, I'll pick them up this arvo and have a slap at installing them tomorrow.

Any tips/tricks to help me along?

I just did mine and used bendix. think it was about 90 from repco and a that does both sides.

Take a photo of the rear shoes, It helps when the memory fades with age, And do one side at a time it gives you a reference

If I'm feeling like I'm in a giving mood, I'll do a how-to on changing shoes/pads

Wasnt for me was meaning for yourself, its the first tool i reach for on a job i havnt done before. Taking a photo on the phone can make life easier

Haha yeah, I'm notorious for taking photos of everything at work, if. Itching else it's good evidence for a case to do something, or not do something, it's handy for reference and to show supervisors the problems. It's definitely my preferred method for getting along reference material.

Took photo,s of a hose on a benz truck last week, then sent it to the dealer to make they knew what i wanted. Good way to make sure we were talking about the same hose

I would suggest getting your rotors and drums machined at the time you change the pads/shoes, If you take them down to any brake place they should do them fairly cheap for you. And inspect the wheel cylinders when doing the back and if they are looking dodgy change them as well coz if it lets go it will piss brake fluid into the drum and then you will have to change the shoes again.
(Info coming from my mate who is the manager/head mechanic at MrBrakes, a local break specialist mechanics)
