newbie question: how do i shift with the transfer case

basically im new to driving 4wd's
i grew up around my dads various toyotas (mostly parados) and enjoyed taking them off-road (had them sunk, sideways, 4wheel burnouts at traffic lights... and 6 foot in the air bursting tyres on impact.) however they had transfer cases that had 4 different stops I.E. you shifted it left then down/up and pushed right to select the new gearing.

However after having a play withthe lever in my D21 it looks like i can only select 2 gears by pushing down for 4H, (than back up to get 2H)
so what is the shift pattern..... as i know it should have 4 gears (2h, 4h, N, 4l)
how do i acces these gears.

as the only thing i can think of is that you need to be in 4h (then move the vehicle forward to select it) before you can shift to 4L. (havent had a chance to check yet, havent been off-road, want to get this sorted before i do)
sorry if it sounds like im an moron.... but it didnt come with an owners manual to consult

Just push the stick down (into the ground) to clear the gate into low range

What Dion said mate. Pull the lever back to 4h then push down on the lever and pull it for 4L

now i know why the bench seat has a cut-out...... that shifts back a fair distance.
