Hi guys, i'm trying to help a mate with his 96' TD27 Navara D21 dual cab 4x4.

His gearbox is stuffed and he couldn't find another until i searched the newspaper for sale section and found a 97' TD27 Navara D22 2x4(rare apparently) wich has the same motor and same FS5W71C 5spd gearbox.
What i wanna know is can this gearbox fit if i remove the back tail of the one out of the D22 2x4 and attach the transfer case from the D21 4x4?
I don't mind sending it to a gearbox speacialist for the changeover if needed as this box out of the D22 was reconditioned just 3months ago then he had an accident(front end damage) and had it written off and he only wants $500 for the box wich is an absolute bargain as the one that is stuffed is gonna cost around $2000 to get fixed.

Cheers for any help!

P.S the full code on the compliance plate says FS5W71C CA48 for the 4x4 D21 and FS5W71C CA41 on the 2x4 D22, am i correct in assuming that it just means 4.1 and 4.8 diff ratios?

Correct on the diff ratios. The tail section is not really swappable, so you'd be swapping the internals into the casing from the 4x4, assuming they fit (never tried it), and by the time the transmission shop has done that and put the box back in the car you wouldn't be far off the $2000 reconditioning price.

Cheers Dion, i'm pulling the old gearbox out and re-fitting it so the shop would just have to deal with the swapping over of the transfer case to the new 2x4 box or swapping the internals over should i say, if it's possible how much would you reckon it would set us back if i take both boxes to the shop?

And also if it's too much trouble to install the transfer case or the internals to the new box then could i just install the box from the 2x4 in and just run it as a 2x4 instead of a 4x4? the 4x4 has manual locking hubs at the front also.

I'm not sure how much the changeover job would cost but it sounds like something no shop is particularly interested in doing and in those situations often the price is high. Not really sure about the rear propshaft length, climb under a 4x2 with a tape measure to confirm that the new bow will be long enough to meet up with the propshaft.

Cheers Dion, rang gearbox and diff centre and they said that they would have to strip both and could swap over, it's the 4wd main shaft that's needed out of the old 4x4 gearbox or something like that.
Total cost with new seals/gaskets is around the $500 mark :)

Not a bad price. I would assume that if you use the propshaft from the 2wd then it should be fine. Chassis length won't change between the 2wd and 4wd. I don't imagine, and everything else should line up.

Yeah not a bad price indeed, especially considering 2nd hand is $1300 delivered with 200,000k on it, gonna pull the box out tomorrow and take it down to them first and get them to make sure there's nothing they need out of it is broken, but it just sounds like a busted bearing.

The gearbox and diff place does free strip and quote wich makes labour really cheap, i'm basically only paying for one box to be put together from two stripped down ones and the 2x4 box has new syncros and bearings so fingers crossed it all goes as planned.

I tried conning him into just running it as a 2x4 to save some coin but meh, was like :deadhorse2: lol

buy a d22 gearbox, trick is it has to be the gearbox behind the qd32 bolt it in and extend the rear driveshaft about 10mm drive off into the sunset

^ Got anymore info on that swap.

I've heard the same - the QD32 and TD27 have the same transmission bolt patterns. Haven't seen it to witness it personally though. Don't know about tailshaft length though.

Cheers for the help fellas, he ended up taking it in and letting them do it so as to have the full 12month warranty on not only the box but any parts they remove and re-install.
They told him around $1100 for removal, repair and refittment and i near choked on my coffee and said i think you mean $2100, ended up costing $2k on the dot.
Could of removed and refitted it ourself and dropped $530 off the price but meh, he's as stubborn as a mule.

so does a QD32 have the same bolt pattern as a td27t, but have a FS5R30A G/box?

would the bolt pattern of a td4.2 be the same?

Yes the qd32 have the same bolt pattern as the td27 I have the qd32 box in my truck. Not sure on the td42 I would guess no
