Time for a new battery (she's starting to struggle) and was wondering if any guru's out there know of a battery to suit my needs. I work FIFO and leave the Nav at the airport for 9 days at a time, I want a battery that'll tolerate that sort of punishment.

I've heard of gel batteries, combine cycle and a few others but I'm not sure what to go for. Any help?

The problem with the Navara D40 is that its on-board computer systems continually run and draw enough power to flatten the starter battery over a period of time. From memory it takes a couple of weeks for a battery in good condition to pass below the danger point where permanent irrecoverable damage occurs to the battery.

That's the 50% charge mark in our starter batteries. This will probably be why yours is suffering so much.

If you replace it with a gel battery you'll kill it fast - gels don't like being charged by an alternator, which usually puts out 14.4V-14.7V and the most you can charge a gel with is 14.1V.

Personally I'd just get another 700CCA starter for it, unless they're over $300 each - then I'd look at a spiral wound AGM.

I would talk to a battery specialist. They'll probably tell you that AGM batteries are a good alternative because you can discharge them to 20% of their capacity and they'll recover - plus the spiral wound ones can be fast-charged and batteries like the Optima D31A yellow top battery for $389 which can deliver 900CCA.

Thanks for the great feedback guys, fingers crossed she starts when I get back to Perth tonight! I am considering a dual battery setup, not too keen on just the isolator, knowing myself I'll forget to use it :)

iv been thru several batteries and found the CAT 760CCA deep cycle to handle long periods without use well.

Isolators are automatic, set-and-forget, they take care of your auxiliary battery without any intervention. Install and enjoy!

i have an optima red top 800cca and its only 4 years old old and its just crapped it self so i wouldn't recomened one of them.

century have 2 one is a N70ZZL 4WD with 760cca and the other is heavyduty DIN65LH 660cca, they recemmend the heavyduty one but i personally would fit the bigger one if it fits. My optima is almost capult after only 4 years so i wont be paying big bucks for another battery again.

Bought a $220 Yuassa N70ZZL for wifies car from Battery World in Oct 09 & it has just about shit itself.

Although it may be illogical because you get good ones & bad ones with all batteries, I won't go near another Century/Yuassa.

Called a Cat dealer. Closest size for purely a starter battery is their battery No. 153 5656.

Only problem is that the negative & positive posts are reversed for my application. Negative on RHS with posts closest to you.
