because of the way the regulations classify different vehicles, a Bullbar for any vehicle needs to be crash tested and to comply with ADR 69 and ADR73.
One of them states that if the vehicle has a gross mass less than 2700kg then it needs to comply with the ADR. The navara has a gross mass of 2920kgs so this ADR doesnt apply??

The other is in regards to whether the vehicle is a goods/load carrying vehicle or a passenger vehicle......when you measure the load capacity of the navara and subtract the weight of passengers (measurement used by authorities is 68kg x 5 seating positions) you see that there is more load weight than passenger weight(payload is 1025kg). So this particular ADR rule doesnt apply??

And also the fact that the regulations state that the bullbar must not affect airbag deployment which it doesnt on the navara since the airbag sensors are impact sensors.

Put this forward to engineer in nsw today, awaiting reply, already works in vic. Big thanks to TUFF IFS LUX for doin the hard work.

best to take your case to your individual engineer, especialy as each state is diff.

3. APPLICABILITY AND IMPLEMENTATION
3.1. Applicability Summary
3.1.1. This ADR applies to the design and construction of vehicles as required
by clauses 3.1.2 and 3.1.3 and set out in clause 3.2.
3.1.2. This rule is binding:
(a) from 1 January 2000 on all new model MA category vehicles;
and with a Gross Vehicle Mass of less than 2.5 tonnes.
(b) from 1 January 2004 on all MA category vehicles with a Gross
Vehicle Mass of less than 2.5 tonnes.
3.1.3. For the purposes of clause 3.1.2, a “new model” MA vehicle is a vehicle
model first produced with a ‘Date of Manufacture’ on or after 1 January
2000.

I guess now its a matter of determining whether a Navara is a MA class vehicle or MC
If it is MA then we are exempt, if MC then the ADR applies???? Yes??

Class definitions:

OFF-ROAD PASSENGER VEHICLE (MC)
A passenger vehicle having up to 9 seating positions, including that of
the driver and being designed with special features for off-road
operation. A vehicle with special features for off-road operation is a
vehicle that:
(a) Unless otherwise ‘Approved‘ has 4 wheel drive; and
(b) has at least 4 of the following 5 characteristics calculated when the
vehicle is at its ‘Unladen Mass‘ on a level surface, with the front
wheels parallel to the vehicle’s longitudinal centreline, and the
tyres inflated to the ‘Manufacturer‘s’ recommended pressure:
(i) ‘Approach Angle‘ of not less than 28 degrees;
(ii) ‘Breakover Angle‘ of not less than 14 degrees;
(iii) ‘Departure Angle‘ of not less than 20 degrees;
(iv) ‘Running Clearance‘ of not less than 200 mm;
(v) ‘Front Axle Clearance‘, ‘Rear Axle Clearance‘ or
‘Suspension Clearance‘ of not less than 175 mm each.

PASSENGER CAR (MA)
A passenger vehicle, not being an off-road passenger vehicle or a
forward-control passenger vehicle, having up to 9 seating positions,
including that of the driver.

Anyone read it different? I'm going to put it forward as Joshy says to a local engineer in QLD.
 
I thought the Navara was an "NA" - Light Goods Vehicle. It's not a passenger car, it's a commercial vehicle because it's a ute.

An offroad passenger vehicle would be a Patrol, X-Trail, Pathfinder, Prado, RAV4 etc etc. Full cabin-over-contents kinda thing.
 
4.5. Goods Vehicles
4.5.1. A motor vehicle constructed primarily for the carriage of goods and
having at least 4 wheels; or 3 wheels and a ‘Gross Vehicle Mass‘
exceeding 1.0 tonne.
4.5.2. A vehicle constructed for both the carriage of persons and the carriage of
goods shall be considered to be primarily for the carriage of goods if the
number of seating positions times 68 kg is less than 50 percent of the
difference between the ‘Gross Vehicle Mass‘ and the ‘Unladen Mass‘.

4.5.3. The equipment and installations carried on certain special-purpose
vehicles not designed for the carriage of passengers (crane vehicles,
workshop vehicles, publicity vehicles, etc.) are regarded as being
equivalent to goods for the purposes of this definition.
4.5.4. A goods vehicle comprising 2 or more non-separable but articulated units
shall be considered as a single vehicle.
4.5.5. LIGHT GOODS VEHICLE (NA)
A goods vehicle with a ‘Gross Vehicle Mass‘ not exceeding 3.5 tonnes.
4.5.6. MEDIUM GOODS VEHICLE (NB)
A goods vehicle with a ‘Gross Vehicle Mass‘ exceeding 3.5 tonnes but
not exceeding 12.0 tonnes.
4.5.7. HEAVY GOODS VEHICLE (NC)
A goods vehicle with a ‘Gross Vehicle Mass‘ exceeding 12.0 tonnes.
 
GVM - 2920kgs
Less payload of - 1025kgs
Gives unladen mass of - 1895kgs
Total passenger weight - 340kgs (68 X 5)

The passenger mass is then just over 1/3 of the payload confirming that the vehicle is NA class.

Still the ADR rules apply......... :(

Going to speak to an engineer and see if there is a way around it still.

TJM are now selling tube bars that are ADR approved, think the brand is Xrox or something? Not sure if theres a navara one yet.

Been watching this thread - I don't want to contribute unless I can help.

Their quote seems very carefully worded.....perhaps a phone call to the seller would clear up the matter? Ask for details on certification. See if bars are airbag certified for X vehicle etc. If the response is "They don't need to be certified" then there's your answer...
 
Outback Accessories are the supplier, not sure if they are the manufacturer. Might give them a call too to see if they are planning on doing a D22 version. They are located in WA (5 Abaya St, Jandakot). Any WA members want to call in and give them a stir along to get the D22 version going?????
 
Monster rides have the XROX bar & sliders, ADR approved and airbag compatible for the D40, thought about it but I think its too "comp truck" looking for the D40
