Does anyone know if the 6 speed out of the D40 would be a straight swap into the D22? Would love an extra gear for the 130 kmh limit in the Territory.

Id say it would with a custom belhousing.

If you have a YD25DDTI CRD powered D22 it would be easier again, the transfer would be the hardest part next.

Dave.

Have you checked that the extra gear is in fact a different ratio, or are the ratios just closer together with similar first and sixth ratios to the first and fifth of your existing gearbox?

That's the case with the FS5W71C and its (rare) sister six speed box.

Just step up in tyre size.

Assuming your sitting on around 3.5K now?
285/75 would reduce it to about 3.3k
315/75 --> 3.1k

You dont wanna be lugging the engine at those speeds so prob stick above 3K rpm.

Suspension lift and bigger tyres would be cheaper than a gearbox swap. Dont know the ratio difference but its probably not much'.

bigger tyres = bigger fuel consumption.

not always the case...i got better fuel consumption with my 35's. got 650km on 31's and 650 on 35s but then you have to add the 10% slower the speedo reads with the 35's on...so i got a fair bit further with the 35's on. and they had a wider surface area then most 35's being a 13.5 tyre and beadlocked.

Thought i'd go to my nissan dealer (Kerry's Darwin, shit service, won't use them again ever)to ask a few questions. Asked about the difference between ratio's for the different boxes, got a curt "nope, don't know 'em, don't need to know them. Asked where i might find out, was told Nissan don't publish info like that. Don't know how they stay in business with shite service like i've had from them over the years.

it should also be online on the nissan australia

just click on the model, select the specifications tab and then download the specs pdf and has ALL the details including ratios, etc.

heres the d22 rations from 1st to 5th:

3.580, 2.077, 1.360, 1.000, 0.760

the d40 ratios are:

4.692, 2.705, 1.747, 1.291, 1.000, 0.827

though the 4x2 petrol and 4x4 petrol have a lower ratio of 0.769

I'll have to find out the difference in diff ratios and tyre sizes as well.

Then
Bell housing
transfer case
gearbox, tailshaft lengths, mounts

i have been think about the same conversion i was gettin about 450km to a tank up there sittin on 130 spewin.

if this is the case why does my 3ltr d22 sit on 2650 rpm at 100kph yet my mates d40 sits on 2000 rpm at 100kph?

well, the 5th gear in the d22 may be better for highway cruising, but it's the diff ratio that kills it.

d40 rear end is 3.692:1 vs d22's 4.625:1

I don't suppose the centres swap straight over front and rear either....

thanks mate, can't believe i didn't think of that.so i wonder how that diff ratio would go in the d22 with a six speed gearbox,i would love to give it a try!!!!!
