Hey guys just wondering if the rear LSD diff in the d40 Nav can be adjusted or shimmed up? I been single wheeling in the wet lately and won't kick out sideways like it used to.. It feels like its lost some slip.. I had a drive of my mates d40 and his wheels both spin off takeoff mine will do it sometimes but singles out as well.. Any opinions?

do yourself a favor and put in a air locker, so much better and full traction to both wheels, excellent fun in the wet.

Yeh would love one but can't afford it at the moment I have other commitments but I will in the future.. As for a quick fix for the moment I'm trying to get around it cost effective

When was the last time your diff had an oil change? Mine has plenty of stick side-to-side and it isn't young...

Noticed once I have a bit of wheel speed it seems to work good but if I take off standing start one wheel on say wet grass. The other on bitumen. nah, not so good.

hes using it to skid the lsd will be cactus, also try using your hand brake throws you into corners lots better. drift king style.

Nah it's got new oils I have changed it twice already from new approx every 60k I do all fluids change to the Nav.. The reason I'm asking is because I have heard about getting the LSD tightened so I wanted to know if anyone has done it or something similar to make the LSD kick in alot more..

I know in the Holden SS diffs you can shim them to get them tight again, but it's only ever a stop gap fix.. people that want proper LSD diffs swap the factory one for a Harrop one.

Diff specialist might be able to tell you.. Either that put some good redline oil in the diff..

I dont know of many LSD's or any that would work that well in the condition you describe, Its asking a bit much fro it to spin the wheel on the tar when all the power has gone to the wet grass.

What happens when both wheels are on the same surface and you are pointing straight ahead??

Both spin. Well I think they do I'm not looking under those conditions but on a gravel road i can feel it straightening up the car.

Im not saying Just on wet grass, what i meant is when the wheels are on the same surface, may that be Gravel, grass, tar or mud ect
I have found the later style of LSD will only work properly when both wheels have equal weight on them and roughly equal resistance from the surface.
So if you are going around a bend and all the weight has shifted to the outside they will tend to single spin, Im not sure if its a deliberate attempt to try and stop them from looping out with inexperienced drivers behind the wheel (ie my misses lol) kind of a poor attempt at stability control.
Personally i would like it to hook up as soon as i stand on the GO peddle and no matter what is going on, but i dont think the manufactures want them that way anymore.

I have had 2 LSD nine inch centres rebuilt. One has far less slip than the other and it can be quite annoying to drive. Slowly turning into a driveway or servo, the tight one chatters like anything and only inducing a bit of wheel spin stops it.

So like Nath said, maybe the set up of the Nav LSD is intentional.

Joe.. For the chatter have you tried some Sturocco Additive - or an LSD Oil that has a % of the addtive already in it?

The Holden LSD diffs chatter without the additive, and with it are a much nicer and quieter "beast"..

This is from the Redline oil Additive "Limited slip or posi-traction units will often chatter without use of this product or a gear oil with a similar modifier, so add only enough to eliminate the chatter and avoid making the plates or clutches too slippery."

I use the Redline oil in my other car, great stuff and no chatter (with some additive).

you should be able to get it shimmed. LSD clutches do wear and the worst thing you can do to them sliding corners, wears them the fastest as you're putting heaps of load on it. I've never seen inside a D40 diff, but you should be able to shim it or replace the clutches. Might be able to throw an additive in the oil to promote more grip as well
