Hi guys
I see most of the solar panels with the regulator installed on their back but shouldn't it be better install the regulator closer to the battery to reduce the voltage drop?

Yes closer to the battery is better. But when u buy the kit its already mounted and people are lazy.
 
You're absolutely right. But over a modest length - like 2-3 metres (enough to run panels to your engine bay) it won't make much difference.

Then there's the assurance the company has that their device is complete - solar panel plus their choice of regulator (which is a reasonably known quantity to them). It means that they can trouble-shoot most problems fairly quickly.
