I rang my insurer this week to see whether or not my insurance would be compromised if I fitted an air locker. I had heard the usual stories saying that I would be wiped if I had an accident etc.

I am with RACQ, they had no idea what an air locker was or what it did so they looked right into it for me and got me to descrie what it did and what its benfit s were. In the end they had no problem with it being there and put a note on my policy stating that they have approved it and all I have to do when I go ahead with it is let them know and they will add it to my policy. Top points for RACQ :victory:

Moral of the story, every insurance company and policy is diiferent so don't listen when someone else tells you what will be covered or not, check with your own insurer!

interesting...didnt think lockers would have insurance issues...hmm better check with mine then as im about to get rear diff locks from arb.

where u getting ur lockers from and u getting front and rears? as iv heard that the d40s front lockers break something under stress...

As far as I have found mate there is no type of locker made for the front of a D40. Rear is the only option so far.

I have got the rear, its going in next friday. Its an ARB too. I'll let you know what I think once I get a chance to really try it out.

cool.
ARB did make front for the d40 but they had alot of callbacks of something breaking...so they no longer do it...im pretty sure i read somewhere that it kept breaking an arm thing?? not sure exactly...rear should be good enuf anyways..

is arb installing it or you?? how much all up installed mate if u dont mind me asking?

Nah I am getting a mate to do mine, he did one in a D40 last week so I am confident he knows what he is doing. He reckons about 4 hours labour plus some oil etc. ARB charge about $500 to fit them, I guess he will be around the same.

Hey fella's, yeah i'm hanging for the front to be released. It has never been produced by ARB and is still under the development stage. I emailed ARB late last year and was told April to May, but coincidentally i emailed them again last night asking for an update, so as soon as i hear something more i'll let ya's know.

Yeah, i'm also super keen to hear how the locker goes in the back of your rig Matt... let us know

yea read few other articles and seems theres no lockers for the R180 diffs which are apparently the front diffs of the d40's. thats rather depressing being weakish..

does the d40 run the R180 front diff also, same as the d22. if so thats pretty piss pore on nissans behalf. you would think being a newer car/model they would at least throw in the r200. geez nissan piss me off sometimes of how tight they can be

Great point!! My insurance is due as I have owned the D40 for 12 months. I discovered that my current insurance only covered me for surveyed roads. In investigating proper 4WD insurance many underwriters will not cover your vehicle when you are 4WDing or for any 4Wd related modification. Anyway there are two specialist 4WD insurance brokers in Australia who both use Allianz as the underwriter with their quotes $400 apart. I went to my own broker and CGU were more than prepared to insure it as a 4WD driven off the road and with all the 4WD accessories fitted and their quote was in the middle of the other two.

i just read another article that says "D40 front diff is the M24 built by Dana as the D40 was designed in the USA"

sorry i just quote stuff from what i read

According to the manual, the front axle "Final Drive Model" is R180A.

It comes in 3 varieties:

VQ40DE Petrol, ratio 3.357, gear teeth/pinion teeth 47/14
YD25DDTi Manual, ratio 3.692, gear/pinion 48/13
YD25DDTi Auto, ratio 3.538, gear/pinion 46/13

hmmm, R180 is a small diff, Another negative for the Navara. ARB are going to have trouble building a locker to suit. I would be surprised if they ever do release one.
We might have to do a diff swap from another truck. Hilux, Rodeo, triton, Dmax, I'm sure they all have front lockers available.

at the end of the day id assume nissan didnt put a serious front diff in as getting diff lockers means your wanting to do some serious 4wd and if u were intending on that then prob expecting us to buy a patrol...maybe..just a thought

I reckon they just figure (and they are probably right) that 95% of us will use the Navara to drive the kids to school, go to westfields and put the occasional sleeping bag in the back for a weekend camping trip. So putting a smaller cheaper diff in makes perfect sense for them. I wonder what percentage of patrols or 200 series cruisers are actually driven how they were designed for? Bugger all I reckon, hence the IFS front in the next patrol.

Both front and rear D40 diff's are Dana.

D40's were designed in the US and Dana diffs were easier and cheaper to source.

Dave.

So I wonder what the manual is referring to.

If I clamber underneath, how would I recognise a Dana? Would it have thick black rimmed glasses and say "Sccchhhwiiiiinnnnng!" a lot or have some other identifying marks that make it obvious?

Dana CV's are usually tailshaft joints on there live axle front diffs. Not sure about the IFS fronts though.

Dave.
