Hi Everyone,

Hope someone can help me,

Just wondering if there are any D40 owners who have had troubles with there front wheel alignment.

I have fitted pirrelli atr 265x75 on the standard alloys 4000k ago, and they seem to be scrubbing out the outer and inner edges on the front...Outer seems worse

I have taken it back for another wheel alignment from where I bought the tyres from , but it still seems to be doing it, with bits of rubber peeling off the edges, and wearing unevenly on the side patterns...

I drive it pretty sedatley and am getting very concerned.

Or maybe someone might know a wheel alignment specialist on the gold coast who knows about d40s ?

Thankyou for your help and the replies everyone...

What pressure are you running them at? Excessive wear on both edges of a tyre can indicate under-inflation. Is it pulling left or right?

i've had loads of issues on my d22, ones that got it closest i think were bob jane there at mermaid beach. i'm going to try out a truck alignment place next time. i think theres one over at molinder. i'd suggest that.

mine is wearing the 265/75 R16 muddies on the inside pretty quick too, had them 10,000km now and can tell the diff as opposed to the rears.
Time for a rotation & allignment I recon

thanks for replying

Hi there,
thanks for replying to my post , I Have just upped the pressures to 40 pounds on the front and 32 on the rear, which are wearing fine.

It is pulling a little to the left , a lot more than i remember before fitting the tyres.....

but the tread seems to be wearing really un- evenly unlike I have seen before on near new tyres.

Thanks again for replying mate,

Hello thanks for replying,

Bob Jane is just around the corner from where I live , I had the tyres fitted and alignment done at Jax at ashmore,

I had faith in the guys there, but know am not too sure.

I have heard of a wheel alignment specialist at southport but can't find a number on google or the yellow pages.....

Its due for a service, so was going to ask nissan for an opinion as well.......
thanks for replying again.

G'day thanks for the reply, mine is worse on the outside pattern I might take a photo posting tomorrow.....

the rears still look new,

I expected some extra wear on the front obviously , but I think mine is way too excessive...
there is rubber peeling off the edges of the tread blocks....
hope it can be resolved next week as at nearly 300 each I am not too happpy at the moment
Goodluck with yours, hope it gets better after a re-alignment and rotation

Cheers

Not exactly related to the scrubbing or wearing issue above but there was an article in one of the recent mags (can't remember which one) suggesting that 40 and over pressures should be avoided in any tyre to ensure good life and comfortable driving. I'm no tyre expert and there is many different tyres out there which require many different pressures but I've never run tyres as high as 40 and thats my two cents worth.

I had my Subaru dealer recommend to me that Forrestors should run 42psi all round a few years back which was pretty good since Pirrelli claimed their tyres shouldn't go more than 38 (but obviously dealers know best). Okay I took 4 cents worth and showed what sort of idiots dealers can be too.

Yeah I agree Krafty 40 is pretty high, somewhere around 36, depends on a few conditions though.

Nissan specs for the D22 are wrong, the camber on the left front wheel needs ajusting 2 degrees more then what Nissan say.

Dave.

Thanks for your reply,
I have only just put the pressures up to 40 last week , as a couple of work mates recommended too me who own landcruisers, when I took the car back for its wheel alignment , they said they would increase the pressures and they did to 39 I think......

Thankyou for the replys , I thought 40 was a bit high myself.

I put a 2 inch lift in my D40 and there is not enough play in the camber and caster adjustments to give it any negative camber.
I have a mate that works at a tyre place and we put it on the alignment machine and
the closest we could get it is 0.1 positive camber. It scrubs the outside of the tyre like a dirty rash.

If you lift the front to the point where your lower control arms are below level (running downhill) you will not be able to get the correct camber.
Hope this helps

D40's shouldn't have negative camber! 0 is correct.

Thankyou for your reply,

I will be taking it back again on wednesday as it is still pulling left slightly an the tread is quite rough across the patterrn as well as some peeling on edges.

Thanks again

Thanks for your reply Mad d40 , must be frustrating scrubbing your tyres like that, as I know I am very frustrated on 4000k on the rubber and obvious difference between front and rear..

I will take it back on wednesday , hope they can get it right.......
this time .

thanks again

My D40 is (from memory) basically zero on the front end. No negative camber. I run pressures around 36PSI and am running mickey thompson mtz's - not what I would call a particularly road friendly tyre. They have been on for approx 30,000km so far with no problem. Rotated approx every 10,000km.

If the alignment in your D40 is within cooee of tolerance, then perhaps the tyres themselves are dodgy. I would not expect rubber to be peeling off as you have described.

Thanks Anthony for your reply, I am just wondering are you running standard front suspension.... ?

As well ......thanks again

Yeah I have the stockies on my thing still and they were rotated at the 10,000km service and i reckon if those tyres went another 5000k on the front thered be nylon showing through the outer edges. I run 38psi as tyre manufactures say to run lower pressures for comfort but wear quicker.

Also I might have missed it but what year is your D40? The earlier models had only 1 adjustment on the lower control arm mount for caster where the later models have adjustments on both lower control arm mounts for caster and camber.
That may be another reason your having trouble or maby try another Wheel alignment place.

Hey mate,
No, mine has an Old Man Emu lift kit under it and a fair whack of weight hanging off the front end too (steel bar, winch etc). That all knocks the front tyres around a lot.

my Kingcab has a 2" lift and the outside of the tyres are good as gold, if anything the inside is going quickish, but for a pretty agressive muddie (MT MTZ) i'm pretty happy
