ive recently bought a 1988 d21 5sp twin cab with a z24 engine the box is tired and id like lsd . i was wondering if anyone knew of a good donor i could take get the parts from, the cheaper the better.

Should bolt straight in as its the same diff (C200).

The ratio will be different though but may make it better for Cruising.

Josh is in Sydney.

Dave.

Gearbox will depend on what you want to do about the engine.
If you're going to keep the Z, you're limited to 4WD Navaras, Pathfinders, Terranos of about the same age, with a 4cyl petrol engine. Check the model of the gearbox, prob a 71C. With a married transfer case, so can't use 2WD gearboxes. More modern 4wd 4cyl petrol gearboxes were a different model, but should swap in ok too. Might need a different crossmember.

If you're going to planning to change the motor at some stage, consider your options.
4 cyl petrol KA24DE - same bellhousing, so gearbox will match. Pretty simple upgrade. They had these form about 99 onwards? KA24E from about 96 to 99 I think. Not quite as good as DE, but better than the Z. Both of these are fuel injected.

If you want a diesel or a V6 petrol, you'll have to get a different gearbox anyway, and things get more complex.

as dave said, should bolt straight in and im in sydney. also have a ZD30 d22 gearbox but no idea with that would fit.

I think it has the same transfer, but suspect it won't bolt to this Z24.
Can you get a pitcure of the front of the ZD30 gearbox from the D22? I saw somewhere it was the same pattern as the VG30 family. Would love to know if this was true.

thanks dave but im in melbourne and i dont have too much coin for a courier . how much torque will i lose with the lsd . its adequate low down at the moment and nice for cruising i have 31's on but once in the mud and rocks will it still be able to get me where i want?

None? LSDs don't all have the same ratio. When you do find an LSD C200, have the centre put into your axle with your crown and pinion by a diff specialist and you won't feel any difference in power at the wheels because there will be no difference. Be careful what year you buy as they changed the number of splines on the axles from 31 to 33 or vice versa, can't remember, before the D22 came out. There's also two different D21 rear axles (everyone here has assumed you have the C200, you might have the H233b) and the centres aren't interchangeable.

Gearboxes, you can buy them reco'd for under $800 on fleabay.

What's your budget?

You will lose power because of the diff ratio.

ZD30 runs 4.375 gears. Z24 runs 4.88 ?

What does your compliance plate say for axle code ?

Dion I assumed C200 as only the VG30E/VG33E/QD32 powered Navara's got the H233B rear end.

Dave.

Z24 doesn't always run 4.88. 4.88 is the 'heavy duty' ratio common on single cab diesels, 4.375 and 4.625 are much more common. He can't just go fitting a different ratio rear diff because his front diff would have to be swapped too. Better to just fit his C&P to whatever diff he gets and keep the ratio he's happy with.

Doesn't d21demon's Z24 have a H233b rear? Maybe he just has a LSD. Not sure.

does hg48 mean anything. thats stamped on the axel space of the plate. i cannot see anything on the rear of the diff itself

That says its a H233B with 4.88 diff gear's.

Well that blows my theory out of the water.

Never seen a Z24 powered Navara with a H233B rear diff.

But in saying that Nissan has a massive parts bin.

Dave.

Yeah, Nissan's parts bin is both huge and very disorganised... Some of the random stuff that comes out of those factories...:big_smile::big_smile:

Well that means you can use a Terrano/Pathfinder LSD centre, which expands your options, but still you'll need to swap the centre into your axle with your crown and pinion to keep your present ratios and you can't use the whole axle as it's 5 link, not leaf suspension. Pathfinders and Terranos never came out with a 4.88, too.

so im hunting for a h233b lsd? sorry so much to take in. i appreciate your patience

Yes. Found in some Pathfinders, all Terranos, some 4x4 Navaras. Sometimes there is an orange tag on the rear of the pumpkin to denote that it is an LSD. Other than that all you can do is jack one rear wheel up with the handbrake off, the truck in 4x4 and hubs locked, and the truck in gear, and try to turn the wheel you've jacked up. If you can't, it's an LSD.

i was thinking a non lockable constant lsd. so if i use the c&p out of the lsd diff that you have suggested not the axel because of the links it will have constant lsd with non lockable hubs.
