probs not looking hard enough haha

cheers all

for his sake i hope its more then 1500kg...

the idiot was towing a car on a trailer today and it easily exceeded 1500kg, if he had a crash then all his insurance would be void!

The law (ADR 44, originally agreed to in 1975 by ATAC in ACT, Vic, SA and WA and ratified by ADR later in 1998 and adopted nationally) states that in absence of manufacturer's specifications, you can tow up to 1.5 times the unladen (kerb) mass of the tow vehicle.

Looks like the Terrano is about 1750kg on the kerb, so your max tow weight is 2625kg.

Anything over 750kg should be braked and over 2,000kg it needs to have break-away brakes (a battery on the trailer that activates the electric trailer brakes if the trailer separates from the tow vehicle).

I do recommend electric brakes and a proportional brake controller.

Terrano II (R20) is a different vehicle, based on a D22 chassis but running a TD27ETi, still got a FS5W71C but in an updated configuration without the chronic bearing weakness.

FS5W71C five speed manual transmissions fitted to the D21 4x4 utilities regularly fail at around 200,000 to 300,000 kms. The one fitted to your friend's TD27T Terrano is not built any differently, but how much it's towed in its life has a huge effect and the problem is most common in the 4x4 utility.

The tell tale is noisy bearings in neutral, 1st-3rd.

With the Terranos, other common problems are:

- stretched transfer case chain, this is again dependent on vehicle history.
- rust in the floorpan above the rear axle (under the rear seat)
- worn out contacts in the headlight switch
- gauge needles curling till they touch the gauge face, and jam.

yeah he had the gauge needles all redone, they were screwed up

he once drove on tarmac in 4wd and said he heard a bang, guessing that was the transfer chain?

havent checked the rear seat floorpan yet...

hi beam didnt work before, but solved that one.
