July last year I bought an 08 D22 Navara with 20K on the clock. Loved it. However I have now done 35K and so far I have had to get the timing chain replaced, Vacuum pump and the rear just has just shit itself. Have I got a lemon or what!!!! I don't drive hard, I regularly get less than 9L per hundred Kand only go off road camping occasionaly. I would go more but it's either at the dealer or I don't trust it taking it anywhere too remote. It's currently in the shop getting the diff looked at and today I found out it will not be covered under warranty due to no manufacturing defect present. How the hell can a vehicle having only done 35K and the diff failed not be a manufacturing fault.
I am very dubious about dealerships so i took it to a 4WD specialist beforehand to get his opinion. The oil sample from the diff was amazing. It was black and th smell of burnt expensive components was sickening not to mention the presence of metal shavings. I would also like to mention that I am ahead in my services and had the 40K major service done 3K ago(which states that the diff oil is to be replaced) Anyway i'm waiting to hear from the dealer if they will send another report stating that the diff has suffered an manufacturing defect. To their credit they seem willing to help but I believe the real problem lies in there actual service department. I believe only a very small part of my service was carried out at all, if any and from now on will take measures to catch them out in the future. Thanks for the rant

Bloody hell!
So long as your book is up to date they have no reason to refute warranty on any part unless you happened to take part in this years Paris Dakar rally.
I feel for you....I have a lemon too and hate it but have separate issues.

that sucks...
you shouldnt be having any of these problems.
my 04 str has done 142k and runs like a charm(touch wood)..
sometimes i think that if something aint broke dont fix it.
i had a d21 v6 that clocked up 375k with MINIMAL servicing done at home by myself.
i just drive them, only check the oil and water and filters and thats all.
good luck with your claim..

You haven't met the current D22....... They make the Ford Exploder parked beside mine look reliable.

yeah the quality control in some of the factory's is poor.
diff seams to be a common enough problem in the later ones. possible wrong oil from factory. there is certainly enough failed ones to show its a defect rather than abuse.

is your's Japanese or Thai? (does the tailgate have ribs - Japanese, or is it flat - Thai?)

I wonder if there were manufacturing issues with some of the early 2.5l D22s?? and if so from which plant???

Thats right, the ribbed tailgates are Japanese models as far as I know. I also have a little plate riveted to the radiator support panel, with "Built Japan June 2004" or something similar.

Agreed.

update

I have just got off the phone with nissan head office. I was enquiring as to why warranty will not cover the rear diff dying. I was told in no uncertain terms that they suspect it has died at 33K because of driver abuse. Can they be serious. I get less than 9L per 100K (best of 8.2L/100) and get my services done 6monthly instead of as per kilometre reading. I've got original tyres with plenty of tread and they think I thrash the F&*K out of it. How can they come up with a diagnosis like that from 2 photos of my diff sent to them from my dealer? I am lucky in the fact that prior to taking her in to my local I had an offroad mechanic take a look at it. He could not believe from the oil sample that I had a service done 3K prior (40K service). He has written me a report to that effect and I am also sending in my fuel logs. I just can't believe I have to prove to these guys that I love my truck and am not some dirty mindless hoon. They really need to improve there after sales service to reflect the quality of there product. Amazingly i'm still a big fan of the D22. Just need to find a decent mechanic to look after her. Thanks for the rant!!!

finally

Finally I find out that Nissan are going to replace my diff under warranty. I kept going into the local dealer with oil sample bottles seeking some clean LSD oil and regular diff oil to compare the sample taken from my diff. The dealer kept postponing while they checked with management and in the end sat me down and told me that they would try again with head office and to hold off on getting the tests. Couple of days later i am informed that a replacement diff is on the way. I can't believe it had to come to me seeking independant oil analysis in order to prove that someone F&*$ed up. Surely the fact that the diff failed so early would have been enough to realise there was a defect within the diff. As it turns out it appears that the wrong oil was used during servicing of the diff and subsequently hoping i would relent and just pay the bill. Not bloody likely. I can only warn other owners that if Nissan or their dealers try to screw you, get proactive and don't give an inch. I wrote a few letters to management(remember don't swear and be reasonable and come across as intelligent and motivated) and had to provide my own research into the problem. 2 months later and I may have my pride and joy dirtside and get some camping trips done. cheers for the help and the rant.:cheers!:

Good outcome mate, just a pity on Nissans side that they made you go to such lengths to prove it. And the fact that they are just gonna take a customers hard earned $$$ until you go to those lengths to prove it is disgusting after sales.

Great news. :cheers!:

I still can't believe car makers like Nissan can still get away with this sort of shoddy crap though. Trying to palm off obviously something they have done wrong and expect you to pay.??

Jeezuz, need some swish lawyers to take these clowns to task so they might think twice about pulling this crap all the time. (Or am I pipe dreaming:devil:)
