roof rack mounts

Hi guys,
I need to source some roof rack mounts to suit the D40.
I want to make up my own steel/aluminum roof rack but need some mounts so I can take accurate measurements etc.

Are there any cheap places around that sell standalone mounts etc?

Is making my own an option?

Any help appreciated.
