I got a rooftop weatherproof bag and put it in-between the sports bar tied down well took all the bumps was even able to open the hard lid(not all the way but close) just remember to put a bit of rubber between it and your hard lid, to stop it rubbing!

I'm thinking of doing this, for the exact same reason. You can get the tracks the bars fit onto, then they are easily removed when you don't need em, my mate has them on the alloy boxes on his ute, works wonders!
