Uhf radio "tx3100" noise

Hi men,
i just wanted to know if my radio should be "quiet" when there is nothing on the channel?
when someone is talking on it i can hear it and its very clear,but in between talk,i get a lot of "static/squelch" noise.
is this normal?

it happens on all channels,even when scanning....its only clear when someone is talking.

I have a tx3100 with a mobile one elevated feed sss antennae.

Have you tried adjusting the squelch? Obvious I know but you'd be suprised how many people don't understand how to use the squelch knob.

its an adjustment issue..
i didnt have a operating booklet when i bought it,and i have now downloaded one from GME....so it should all be ok..
should have done that first ay...

Yeah thank god these companies have started putting their manuals on the net it's made life so much easier for many of us. Now if only they'd whack up circuit diagrams instead of having to buy them from all those dodgy websites.
