Tyre size confusion

Using this calculator:

Tire size calculator

my 255/70/16 should measure 763.4mm or 30.1 inches. My tape measure shows 730mm or 28.7 inches. Can anyone fill me in on what is going on? Is the calculator wrong?

I was looking for 265/75's next which should measure 31.6mm by the calculator....or do they?

The calculator works out correct...
0.5*16"=8"
8"*25.4=203.2mm
255*.7=178.5mm
(203.2+178.5)*2=763.4mm.

So that's weird?

Are you measuring the tyre horizontally if it's still on the vehicle?

Ok stupid me.....

I measured from top to bottom thinking that the flat at the bottom would make bugger all difference, but it does......30mm in fact

Next time i shall double check before asking stupid questions lol.
