Hi all,I'm just wondering if anyone uses or recommends using fuel additives in there common rail diesel...pros and cons ??

watching this one, i use one, rightly or not, can`t remember what it`s called right now, i`ll get back to it later,

Talking exclusively about bottled additives specifically designed for diesel engines, not other possible additives/mixtures.

Normally I don't. I tried Chemtech's Diesel Power and found no difference between using it and not.

When my engine starts "hunting" at idle (regular minor surging) I'll throw a bottle of Liqui Moly Fuel System Treatment in (about $25 at SCA). Fixes the problem within 100-200km of driving.

I've never used them but do the same thing as Tony mentioned. Just bottle of that gear if there is any hunting at idle. Works a treat. One thing I am very particular about is where I buy my diesel.

I think any money put towards additives would be better spent changing the fuel filter more regularly.

I use Wynn's EDT every tank refill. The fuel Quality here in Central Qld is poor to say the least. EDT kills off Algae, separates the water from the diesel, boosts the Cetane rating and is an injector cleaner to boot.

I have been informed, by a CRD specialist, that Fuel Doctor also offer a very good product.

I have a 800L fuel tank that i fill out of, i put 1 litre of Liqui Moly Diesel Clean & Boost in each (800L) tank full. 1 litre is ment to treat up to 1000L but doing it this way is easy and its still within there recommended dose.

As far as what it actually does.. not 100% sure. Just peace of mind for me, cant be causing any damage anyway.

Thanks for the replies(info),much appreciated.

Fuel doctor is a very good Product, but should not be used in common rails due to the fact that this additive force reduces the size of the water molecules so it's safe enough to go through an older diesel system without causing damage past the water trap. A common rail can't tolerate any water no matter how small the molecules are due to such high pressures and close tolerances.

Sorry to revive an old thread here but is Liqui Moly products such as Diesel clean and boost and diesel injector cleaner are safe for use in common rail diesel engines. Trying to keep it nice and clean for longevity. Thanks, Chris

The Liqui moly diesel purge plus is wonderful gear for cleaning injectors.
You pull the fuel lines off your fuel filter and stick them both in the can of purge liquid so it runs purely on the stuff

Works a treat, it really noticeably changed the idle for my yd25

Smoother and no hunting, plus one less crank to start on cold mornings, basically starts first drop of the piston now

Nice to know Tony.
Do you treat every tank or every so often?
Czechmate, yeah I was looking at that purge plus also and was wondering if anyone had any experience with it. Is it safe to just run the engine off the purge plus stuff?

I haven't done it in a while actually, and it's probably about time I did it again. I'll be towing the van on the long weekend (will be working at Sydney Motorsport Park for the Classic Speed Festival) and that will be a good exercise for a tankful.

It's not necessary to use it all the time.

Yes running it purely off the can is the way its done, its definitely safe for common rails, all diesels have been common rail in europe now for years and years so all liqui moly gear is common rail friendly

Liqui moly know their stuff and have a well earned reputation for quality

The engine idles smoothly while its sucking this purge stuff in, you cant even tell, besides from the smell of the exhaust

I noticed the liquid in the bottom of the can was quite warm towards the end of the 10-15 minutes it took to drain the can, as the fuel circulates through the pump and back to the can, cooling the pump as it goes

Somewhere on this forum someone, i forget who, posted some photos of a little rig theyd made up with clear hose and joiners to extend the stock fuel lines and make it easier to poke them into the can

I didnt need to as ive replaced the fuel lines with Mackay aftermarket ones and they were plenty long

At the wnd of the purge i shut the motor off while there was still a few ml left in the bottom of the can to make sure i didnt suck in any air

This is liquimolys own explanation of how to do the purge, and why its much more effective than just adding some solvent to the tank

I do it every 12-18 months

Hi Czechmate,
Its good to know that Liqui Moly is a good brand and that it seems to be highly recommended.
Glad to know that they are safe in the common rails, read a few post about certain additives were not to be used in common rails as they micronize the particles and go where they shouldn't which had me worried.
I followed the link and it explained everything pretty easy so will give it a go before the next service.
Thanks heaps for the info Mate.

Wonder how you'd go crimping the fuel lines, undoing the filter, filling it up with the purge stuff, put it back on and running it that way? Sounds like good stuff but not keen on the possibility of it running dry using the container method.

thats not a bad idea there, not sure how big the liquid moly can is but if it holds approx the same volume of liquid as the fuel filter it would be great when changing the fuel filter just fill it up and screw it on and thats it ready to purge.

Had my 2014 D22 serviced yesterday at Berwick Mitsubishi, were I brought It. I ask for a fuel line flush, They recommended the diesel fuel system cleaner from Mitsubishi. MZ100722EX said it was no snake oil.

Tony any suggestions please

Hi Tony,
Do you have any of these cleaners you would recommend for my D21 SD25,
you know , the powerful one, LoL, I have just finished servicing my "Warmers"
and would like to put a Liquid cleaner through the Injectors before Winter falls upon us!
Best regards,

500 ml, so probably not enough to fill the fuel filter.

Thinking about it, not sure it would work very well anyway. Probably would quickly end up being diluted in the tank via return hose instead of circulating? Surely better than nothing though.
