turbo worn?

while changing my alternator pulley for the 3rd time, i decided to check my turbo while everything was out. looks ok, but have up to maybe 1mm of sideways movement. is there a tolerance?, it's a bit hard to get a feeler gauge in there!

i don,t think you should have any play in the sideways direction but maybe abit in / out direction is ok. chances are the bearings are giving this free play and might need replacing very soon.

My understanding there is a bush rather than a bearing and without oil pressure there will be some play.

you sure there would be bushes and not high speed bearings for the rotor ?

It's a brass bush fed with oil under pressure. I replaced mine for slightly more play than that. If in doubt, open the oil pipe heading towards the intercooler and examine the oil film inside for metallic particles.
