Personally I dont think people have caused anything to do with global warming.

Its a weather pattern.

Here's one for use. Remember when things were designed to last ?

Now we live in a world of cheap shit that fails faster and you through it away.

^ How is that going green ?

Gotta agree with Tiburn.

Agreed, this is like weather patterns that happened long before the invention of a V8.

I reckon half of this is our socialist government trying to big note themselves on the world stage. They think we are big players on that stage, when we are absolute minnows. All this free trade crap (yes I know the Libs had a fair bit to do with that) is just one way traffic, and is killing our farming industry, as one example. As if the big players are gunna follow a piddly little place like us.

That's a good point Bulwinkle, and just look at our own Navaras as perfect examples.

European 2009 D40 STX gets audio controls in steering, climate control, 17" rims and I think reversing camera built into the rear view mirror.

It's the same in the computer industry. America has the latest widgetry there, with the exception of Apple who release their stuff globally at the same time. Want the latest model Intel processor-powered board for your server? You have to wait, America is in line before you.

So if we count so little, can we make a difference?

I actually believe we can. We might come second or third in the race for new technology manufactured over there, but China is employing Australian engineers to put wind energy systems in, they're looking at our advancements in solar technologies.

If the world's largest population and fastest growing economy pays attention to us, then when we make a move that affects how we impact on our environment (which if you cut the thing down to its original purpose and ignore that it may just be a tax grab, that's what it's about) you can bet the whole farm that they're watching us closely.

How much smog hangs over Beijing? They're inundated with pollution. If we come up with some idea that gets the manufacturing sector to do stuff smarter, they may just follow suit.

I don't think ANY country has the balls to do it yet, they're all waiting to see if it's going to work somewhere else, because it WILL have an impact on prices and the average Joe, so it won't be the favourite thing the government's done - but at the end of the day, if the factories run cleaner and we're not poisoning the air we're trying to breathe, other countries will see it, hop on the train and then we're back to where we are today, but with less environmental impact.

Now just let me finish this by saying that's a waaaaay optimistic view. I do NOT think the carbon price is going to achieve that on its own. There has to be other incentives, or maybe the carbon price for "x amount OVER some nominal amount" attracts a heavy price, to handle the big polluters, and other industries work on an incentive-based scheme.

I don't have the answer, but I do know that someone, somehow, has to start walking towards the final goal and until we take some steps - and even bad ones are good, because then we learn not to repeat 'em - we aren't going to be going anywhere.

Even if we're walking in the wrong direction, we'll figure it out and turn around and eventually make progress. We'll never do that by sitting on our hands.

So in a sense, kudos should go to the government for grabbing this issue by the short and curlies. They might be ballsing it up, but a step is a step and whether it's good or bad, we learn from it.

It's not weather - It is climate patterns. Weather is what happens today, tomorrow etc. The climate is (at least) a 30 year average of the weather.

CO2 is an extremely efficient green house gas - small increases in the atmosphere have a large effect on global temp. So, when we add the emissions of too many V8s to natural inputs the global temp rises.

We've known about CC for about 40 years - and done SFA. So yes, you are right - Kudos for having the nuts to do SOMTHING, even if it is unpalatable for most.

All I can add is if things go up in price for me I'll just pass it on to all those pensioners I do work for ppfffffttt!

Brad

...who will be compensated via income tax rebates. The upshot being that someone who can reduce consumption of carbon intense products/ services may be able to come out in front.

Umm, most pensioners don't pay income tax. So they will not be compensated.

Nicely spotted. Be interesting to see how they fix that. I know pensioners don't contribute to emissions as much as us young 'uns with our Bugatti Veyrons but ordinary items will be more expensive, squeezing their budgets tighter.

Hopefully it will be accompanied by a rise in the pension and a corresponding rise in the tax-free threshold.

If it's a Centrelink payment then they will pay income tax - (alomst) all income above ~$6500 attracts income tax (happy to be wrong). So an appropriate compensation may be 0% on incomes up to $20k (or there abouts).

I'm not sure about Aged Pensions, but disability pensions are not income taxed at all(except were they affect partner).

You can not just go off the minimum taxable amount. AFAIK, if your sole income is the basic pension, which is ???p.a., then you will not pay any income tax. There are a number of rebates that kick in for older workers that help protect any extra pittance.

Not sure they will be fairly compensated either. The basic pension is not what the pollies and media report. There is a pittance and a number of assistance grants like phones, pharma, etc, which were all paid if eligible. Smary bitch Gillard changed the system so they no longer identify the individual subsidies, but lump them as one and capped it. Tight arsed bitch.

Sorry, nakedape, you are wrong. When you factor in the tax free threshold, low income tax rebate and senior Australians tax offset, very few pensioners, indeed very few retirees, will pay income tax.

I'd imagine that there will have to be some kind of physical payment to pensioners if/when this frigging ridiculous scheme comes in.

I don't really qualify as a young 'un any more, but I am putting my hand up for a Veyron.

And as one of the "climate change scientists" stated on the radio today, even if ALL countries could cut emissions to zero tomorrow, it could still take a couple of hundred, or maybe a thousand years for there to be a worthwhile reduction in global temperatures.

That statement says it all for me, its a crock, and Gillard needs to wake up.

Actually Ray, Tim Flannery isn't even a climate scientist he is a climate activist. His science in in Palaeontology (or story telling if you like). This is the kind that can say "Hubbard eat your heart out!" (L. Ron. Hubbard science fiction writer and founder of Scientology) makes you feel all warm and fuzzy don't it?

Like I said nakedape in my first post pppffffffffffffffffttttttttttttttttttttttt !!!!

Cheers Brad

I think climate change is a load of shit aswell.

Put a supercharger on that VG33E Ray. Dont worry about emissions.

HAHAHAHA, love your way of thinking Dave. However, unless the little lotto balls line up for me, it'll be exhaust/snorkel etc just to help the poor V6 along.

We actually had another V6 at Landcruiser Park on the weekend, I didn't feel lonely any more, :sarcastic:

I pulled up behind a Navara identical to your's Ray a few days ago. V6 aswell.

If it wasn't for the NSW rego plates I thought it was you.
