Hi all. I have a '03 d22 and was wondering after searching here and on the web what rear diffs are available for the zd d22?
I have a diff shudder and was looking for a fix and decided on getting a locker. I don't want an air locker and don't really want to match the elocker in the front so I was looking into a auto diff lock- my question is "who" makes a diff locker for the rear on the nav's..

cheers vic

You don't want an auto locker in the rear, your diff will be chirping around every corner, maybe try shimming the LSD?

Well I thought that also Dilmah but the Detroit tru-trac fix's those isseues but there is nothing for the Nav's rear?
And regarding a re build of the old= 360 here in vic wont touch them !
There is a swap to a v6 diff that's standard for them and a stronger than the one in mine now? I'm looking into that and maybe get a second hand one of these and service/re build that !
I'm not to sure what diff's are what but I think mine is a "c200" ? anyone like to chime in on that info' and their thoughts on what my diff is and what to do would be great.
What would you do Dilmah and anyone elase for that matter? cheers vic

Do you have a diff lock in the front?
I've allways found the Navs will allways perform way better off road with a front LSD/diff lock...as this is where the weight is.

with regards to the rear, d21/d22 and d40s have c200 rears, just with different pinion designs etc etc.
d21 and d22 had options for h233b rears...d22 in the 3l petrol and QD32.. this has a larger housing, larger crown etc etc BUT the LSD shims are similar diameter to the c200 model.

when you compare a patrol h233b you will see the shims are about twice the size and the reason why the patrols LSD are quite famous.

pointing this out because its not overly worth changing to a navara h233b diff for the LSD shims performance etc etc....

I have over-shimmed many diffs, both d21 and d22 and depending how you go it ends up being a lokka. when unloaded a nav is stupid light in the rear, so lokka rear gives you a new driving experience and it will chirp the wheels everywhere...with a bit of weight in the rear it will be easier for the lsd shims to be independent and act more like an LSD instead of lokka.

putting in shims is no hard, if you know a bit about basic mechanics and take your time and do the measurements.
as your diff is playing up, id suggest getting a good condition secondhand one and working on that, as yours wont go back together without proper inspection from a specialist who can set the shims and backlash etc corectly.

Nice work unknown.. thanks. Yes I do have the eton in the front and I am stumped on what to do to the rear? I'd like to get a new centre and be done with it but 360 here in vic said they only fit up the etons in the rear- And $1600 plus installation is getting to rich for the nav "me thinks" - that would be over 3 grand for diff centres alone and i'm sick of spending ! After cross countries rip off i'm over it ! totally fukcen over it !

Put a front LOKKA IN From four-wheel-drive systems. And shim the back LSD UP Tighter.

Or you could get a E-Locker from Harrop.

The locker would be my first choice....
But I guess it depends on money...

And personal choice

See if you can get a second hand centre from someone who has put a locker in the rear. Most diff shops will give them away as they have way too many. The C200 is a reasonabley strong diff it is similar to a solid axle hilux with a 8" crownwheel and good sized bearings. It will run 35's no problem. Labour to swap cantres over should be no more than $200. The pinion doesn't need to be touched which is the time consuming part when setting up diffs

Good thought's dilmah, it's set up for touring mainly so your right the stock one would do.. Strange no one does a rear diff locker other than air and e lockers! I'd happy to rebuild mine- what causes the shudder -the shims/clutch?

It would be cheaper to just swap the centres over, I'm not too sure on the exact workings of lsd's but they have shims on either side of the spider gears to limit shaft spin. e.g when one side is spinning a lot quicker than the other the shims bind up to slow it down. Id say if it is shuddering around corners the shims are locking up prematurely

I can't understand why a diff shop won't fix or rebuild a diff. Seems like money hungry sales pitch. take it to another reputable mechanic and get it rebuilt there. Scott Thomas may know someone in Vic that is good to work with as he has done lots of work to his truck. I have the Eaton locker up front like yourself and have had the rear diff shimmed. I rarely use the locker due to the Lsd being so good (if your know the technique to make the Lsd work properly).

I honestly would ring around. Find the parts yourself and book it in to get work done. Maybe an opportunity to redo the wheel bearings etc while it's all out

on to it now rusty- i'd say 360 diffs may have wanted to sell and fit an elocker ..lol a lot easier!
That's the way I'd go about it rusty- I've just done the front end from rotors and 4x4 pads, bearings, bump stops etc H/D Clutch kit spigot etc rear main and sump off and re seal (yup front diff out again) all for a trip I'm planning for the top end so I want it right..

If you could source a diff specialist "that's known" that would be great!
cheers vic

Message scottybobcat on this forum mate. I'm 100% sure he would have a contact for works. Or if your on Facebook on any of the Navara pages search for Scott Thomas. Great bloke to chat to. He built my sliders and shipped from Vic cheaper then I could get them done in Brisbane at the time.

AHH very good rustynav-will do! On to a place that's been highly spoke of in Hallam called "diff doctor" ! Spoke to him today and he did say "he's rebuilt plenty"!
Seems honest enough- told me to look at the t/shaft centre bearing first. Makes sense really -could be a cheaper fix at $60 for a fleebay one.(rang Nissan just to check price- hold on,,,try $320 trade!!!)
He Also mentioned doing a few tight circles in reverse, in either direction to see if it makes a diff'ernence but sad to report no change with this "shudder/vibration" coming from the driveline some where at the rear!
I'll do the centre bearing Monday and "we" will see I guess,,, I'm betting it's the Diff' (going by my luck) but I'm hoping to be surprised...
I would still like to have the diff looked at with this trip up north looming- even a shim adjustment is going to add up once I start doing bearings etc etc
I'm hoping it's a shim or two as $1600 for the elocker plus fitting plus bearings etc wont leave much change out of $2g's... oowch

That's what you'll pay for elockers for sure...but they are so good--flic of a switch when only needed :makeout:

Anyone using detroit lockers? They're cheap and bullet proof, wondering if there is any reason not to use them instead of e-lockers and such.

Crunch crunch slop slop, that how my diff goes round....

Just got to Vic from QLD, go to adjust and clean brakes and noticed a lot of play and a crunch crunch coming from the 300'000 k diff... Dropped oil and 2 metal pieces dropped out, looks like spring disc parts.
