That's because the Optima batteries are intended as a deep cycle first, and cranker second.

I purchased a Century 910CCA from Century/Yuasa at Broadmeadow (Newcastle, NSW). Also available from SCA although I'm not sure the one I linked is the exact same as mine - you might be better off going to a battery specialist. Can't complain about the Century.

A side note: my car has been doing a lot of short hops between the long hauls. Start, drive for a minute, stop. Sits turned off for about 15 minutes, then is started, driven for a minute, stopped. It killed my last (Century) battery but I recognised that it wasn't the battery's fault. We replaced the starter battery and ordered a solar panel (40W) and PWM controller. Didn't need anything massive or expensive, it only has to slowly top the battery back up. Finished the install today, it's already paying for itself. Solar panel is mounted on my roof tray, and the cable that had powered my roof lights now carries the solar power down to the PWM controller that I've mounted on as short a lead as possible right next to the battery. The roof lights are now on my Goldwing, and I can finally see the road at night! Glad they were there, because I just missed a family of deer a few nights ago.
