Hey mate, The injector pump in my '05 D22 ZD30 shat itself about 6 weeks ago. Mechanic did the work, sourced the pump etc. First price he got (on a Fri arvo) was $2800 for new pump. I did some looking online over that weekend & found a supplier selling exchange VP44 injector pumps for around $1900. I told the mechanic about this. He rang them up enquiring why they were cheaper & was eventually told that they don't actually rebuild the old pumps- just replace components and resell- so decided against that option. The mechanic ended up getting me a brand new pump for $2600 which, all things considered, I reckon is not too bad. 9 hrs labour plus gaskets, seals, O-rings, fuel lines, new coolant etc. came to just over $4000 all up. Hurt a bit but all good now. 2nd hand pump & fitted myself would have been a lot cheaper, but at least you can have confidence that a new pump should be good for many years and thousands of kays, where a 2nd hand pump is an unknown quantity.
That is my experience- how did you go with yours?

VP44 failures are usually the electronics on top of the pump, not the mechanicals. Scroll down this page to a post by XMX, it explains what fails and how it can be fixed. http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=42962
I do remember see somewhere on the internetz that you could buy just the electronics for the pump but i can't remember where i saw that.
Here's some more reading.

Nice find, Ive just enjoyed a whole lot of learning about our injector pumps!

Are the injector pumps less likely to die in the later 3L models? 05 06 models or are they all just as susceptible?

all much the same afaik.
just be aware there is 2-3 different versions and you need to replace it with the correct one.
