I have a 04 D22 series 2 STR with about 100,000. I guess you all heard of the myth of the Turbo blowing up between 100k and 130k and wrecking the motor. Just wondering has this true with any one. My ute makes a little howl noise around 2000 - 2300 rpm while cold but after about 3-4 mins its gone and all is normal. (or out of gear give a little rev and its not there) I work at a Honda dealership and a ex nissan mechanic drove it and and it sounds more like a induction type noise all hoses are ok. Any comments?

By the way I have had this ute 6 months and done 8,000kms and noise has always been there.

And is a awesome ute!!!!!

i would give nissan service area a call and try and ask for a "specialist" if theres one lol and see what they reckon before it goes pop maybe.

Yeah this guy is awesome with nissans and worked on this model (was nissan tech for 7 years) but yeah i have other mates at a nissian dealership so might make a visit but motor has to be cold. (spoke to my mate at nissan service and they have replaced one turbo with over 200,000km on it but no motors)

if it makes a whining noise the turbo has crapped itself, but this wont be in an isolated rev range or length of time running thing. If your that worried check the play on the turbo shaft.
is the howl more like a whistle? when its cold the turbo spool whistle is louder.
And yes theres truth to the rumour.

sounds like oil.
do an oil change with some high grade oil and see if that helps.

the turbo's blow because the drivers don't let the non-water cooled turbo's cool down. i've noticed it only takes a tank of poorer fuel to make turbo temps a fair bit hotter.

check your exhaust manifold i have found a few of them leaking causing and induction type noise when cold u should be able to see a small amount of black soot usually at the rear or front of the manifold

My Nav has over 160,000km's on it now and the turbo has never been touched.

Dave.

Thanks guys, it has a up to date full nissan service history and just one older owner but I will be doing oil and filter changes every 5,000 km or 6 months using good oil. Yeah Joshy I agree with what you said cause if it was turbo it would not matter about rev range or temp (cause once your over 2500 rpm the noise is gone and turbo sounds fine while it is cold and after 4 minutes or so there is no noise and you just just hear that lovely turbo noise).

Mine crapped itself at 110k. By chance, actually went to a turbo place today to organise to get an intercooler fitted on friday and asked the guy about these turbos, he said he has had 3 come in with blown turbos recently, which is why they wanted intercoolers, to catch the shrapnel before it goes in the motor. My advice would be to get it inspected by a turbo specialist at 100k intervals. The place I went to today (ASE) said he was thinking about an upgrade turbo kit for the D22, i thought there would be a few takers as no one else seems to do one.

If they do a ball bearing garret turbo I maybe interested. I am running a ASE intercooler.

Dave.

Not always the case

true but i think its more common than they realize. even with an empty vehicle you only need a slight hill to put the temp up. i found that with poor fuel temps where almost always high enough to require cool down time.

i did forget that fuel leaking from the injector connections contaminates the oil and first thing to go is normally the turbo.

Did the Turbo only go or did it go through the motor?? Yeah im thinking about a intercooler for mine.

I have that exact same noise under the exact same conditions.

So were the same but because not everyone is saying this issue its probably not normal

If you diagnose it please post here

I'll be getting my turbo checked out in 3,000km (next service) as it will be that last service under warranty.

If i find the cause I'll let you know also

on mine it was just the bearing, but had the engine stripped to check, so had it rebuilt since it was out anyway. Wouldn't have been too bad other than my injection pump needed rebuild and new injectors, about $3500 for that. About $6000 to rebuild just the motor (long motor) with new turbo.

No worries, thanks for the reply. Yeah I will try and work out what is going on, I really dont think its turbo but I dont want to risk it cause it cost me 21k and I dont really want to spend money fixing it. Let me know when you get yours checked, how long have you noticed your noise. I have done 8000 kms since I bought it second hand and its always been there (no worse). If your in south east QLD we could compare the utes.

I'm in SA

I've had the ute since 14,000 its now at 47,000. I noticed it since I got it. But didn't think anything of it until I rode in another Nav that didn't have the sound when cold

.

I have just bought my truck and has been great so far.

I am a bit wearing after reading this post because my truck does exactly the same as davedt83's when I start up for work in the morning. Is this a turbo fault from peoples experience or is this just a normal cold tight diesel engine in the morning? I have never driven another D22 so i have nothing to compare to.

By the way my truck has clocked 134k and has full Nissan service history every 10 000km's.

Regards,

Youngy

Im thinking its not turbo. Maybe EGR valve (or a leak somewhere) as per the advise of a mechanic. If it was turbo it would always be there not just when cold and not depending on rev range cause as soon as its warmed up she is fine.(which I agreed with when Joshy said it). Still be nice to get to the bottom of it. Going to go to Sandy cape at Fraser Island at the end of the year, Hate to get stuck up there.lol.
