Hey Guys,

Just trying to work out the most efficient way to buy oil filters as lord knows how many us diesel drivers go through. My qualm is finding the best value to buy and making sure I am not using something which is not and effective oil filter. I see many different bands around and then of course there is genuine.

Genuine Filter - People say the best but who knows, called my local nissan and they said $36ish each and if I buy 10 they could do them fro $29 each

Ryco - What I am currently using, cost about $30, used to be aussie made but from what I can tell now they are made in china and have had threading issues for some models (not that we need worry about this as ours dont have a threaded metal casing ha)

Sakura - Someone said it was Jap made, others say Thai? These are very cheap can be had on Ebay for $70 for 10 of them, seems good value but are they crap filters?

Then there are all the other various brands, valvoline, fleetguard, donaldson, Hmmel&Mann etc......

I have trawled the net and seen come comparo's with filtering (usually of brands we dont have in Aus), some filter well but then impede oil flow rate as a consequence, others have good flow but poorer filtering.

Does anyone in the know recommend a decent filter at a decent price? Or is it a much of a muchness because each filter that is manufactured has to comply with certain rules and regs and should be up to standard for our use?

Is it best to pay an arm and a leg and just get genuine? Everything with a bloody diesel tag on it seems way more expensive, coming from a former petrol commodore driver.

The Z89A that suits the 2.5lt Nav is fitted to heaps of petrol motors too. I have fitted them to Escorts, Volvo's and my Lada. Not promoting Ryco but that model filter is a pretty universal one.
Not sure if there is a difference but the Lada spare parts bloke says there are oil pressure issues going non genuine but I have never noticed.

Great question Shorty.

Wondering myself lately.

The drain back valve was brought to my attention recently as the ryco on my n16 Pulsar failed in that department.

I'm going back to genuine.
Prevention won't cost what it would to cure.
I don't fell like a week without my old doll all broke to bits either.

Be careful. I used a Ryco- once on an Isuzu I use to own also had the upside down mounting like the Nissan would take 5~7 seconds for the oil pressure light to go out and gauge start to move on a cold start as the check valve was mounted in the wrong end. Otherwise the filter was ok with good oil pressure once running.

Cheers Tony,

Read both threads and still not sure if anyone has found a good alternative or actual way that is most efficient to buy oil filters. The fleetguard cummins ones seem to be good value. Do the ZD30 oil filters have the anti-back flow valve thing?

No the zd30 oil filter is just a filter element no other drain back valves or bypass valves. I allways use Ryco as I get them at good trade prices and have not had an issue with them, I have seen cases were the o-ring has leaked but one off cases most likely put down to user error. At work we fit osk filters to all zd30 motors that come through the door with a 0 fail rate so far. Tyco filters are generally made buy oem company's so that there guarantee of matching the flow, life and filtration rate of genuine filters is met, so if you find a Chinese made ryco filter it is likely the pen company manufactures their filters in China. Ryco filters come from all different companies around the world and as such you will notice the packaging isn't all 100% the same depending on where they are made.

I've been buying filters from Wesftern Filters on ebay, get a air oil and fuel filter for $55 plus freight, fast delivery and have had no problems.

I use genuine after using ryco and other brands with startup taking longer for pressure to build up. You can get genuine filters off ebay for $20 each. Best buying bulk. I think i could get them from NizzBits for $20-25 each + postage. I am thinking of just buying 10 and keeping them as itll work out cheaper long term

I use the Mann Filter, it's the genuine aftermarket so to speak. Genuine Nissan filters are made by Mann in Germany and you can get them and the removal tool from (Western Filters) online. They are cheaper than buying them from Nissan.

Cheers

I find Baldwin better, larger surface area at 1/3 the price of Mann..
