At last I've solved the problem after changing the injectors, glow plugs, adjusting valve clearances, checking for air leakes in fuel supply and doing a compression test.
The only thing remaining was the injector pump and let me tell you the task of changing it was hell. The pump was obtained from the wreckers for $400 with a bit of haggling, These are rare as hens teeth and cost a fortune to get overhauled, Luckily for me the risk was worth it in the fact it works perfectly.
the results were a smoke free engine on start up, no more missing and more power to boot. I also re connected the coolant temp sensor and still no smoking. Next step when funds available is the turbo.
