I think that the question of overloading the drive train in low range 2WD is overrated. When you are operating in 4wd low range, you often have all the drive torque transmitted to as few as one or 2 wheels. Same result! But as with everything, don't use the 2wd low range to rip and tear!

I am thinking of buying a new Navara ST-X, but am deterred by the apparent inability to engage low range without having the front hubs locked in (ie in 4WD). I can do this now with my Patrol by leaving the front (manual) hubs unlocked and this is very useful when trying to back heavy trailers up...
