engine rattle/noise @ 2600rpm

gday all, just wanted a few ideas/feedback on new noise in my ol ZD30. Im running a crosscountry cooler and a 80 series airbox but all that is unrelated cos we have done a 22,000km lap of Aus towing 2ton of camper with the changes. couple w/e's ago hooked up the camper and headed off, on way home the wife was driving and I noticed a weird rattle/metallic/tinking kinda noise as she was changing from 4th to 5th and again in 5th as she accel for a hill etc. Noise seems to come in at about 2650rpm and seems to be caused by throttle percentage/boost amount, i.e gentle throttle application doesn't seem to cause noise. can get it to do it accel hard in 3rd, but really its just before 80km/hr and around 100km if u go to accel for a hill or overtake, back off the throttle a little noise drops out and it will still accelerate. My fuel consumption is up a little and catch can seems to be getting bit of extra oil in it of late. The 8yr old can hear from backseat so its not like you really have to listen for it lol. It feels like it comes in at peak boost. She has done 20600km and new injectors at 170k. booked in at diesel specialist and having a run on dyno and getting turbo checked cos she sucked a bit of dust thro cheap repco filters up the Cape, and ideas appreciated.

Bob, it's defiantly not a squeal?, how much dust did it ingest with the cheap filters, Can you check the fins on the turbo for wear and abnormal play in general?.

nah not a squeal, I haven't checked turbo yet, I was originally leaning towards timing chain but the wife kindly reminded me of the shit filters up the cape, she didn't ingest too much was only ultra fine powder, just a fine red dusting in the lid of the airbox. after towing 2 ton 22,000km around Aus in 11 wks and getting pounded up the Cape and on the Gibb......she prob got every right to make a few noises lol. Gunna stuff a camera up thro egr port into manifold and check for crudd/restrictions on #4 intake too.

Most paper filters are made to the same standard. If you are worred about the fine dirt in your Airbox maybe check the lid to see if it's sealing properly or leaks anywhere after the Airbox. I'm lead to believe that rubber ribbed 90 degree hose which attaches to the turbo is known to deteriorate and leak also

You would have to be unlucky for it to be the chain Bob there is heaps of high km Zd's untouched in that area, all the best mate.

shorty, was the filters mate, picked up a ryco in Weipa and no more probs, only thing was I had 3 spare shit ones, also im running a 80 series box, got rid of all standard hoses.......6 months after I spent $340 replacing it, all silicon and stainless now

Check the exhaust hanger on the side of the gearbox, if it's munted the exhaust hits the chassis and makes that kind of sound.

Check the little white clips on the firewall that hold the brake lines. Mine did similiar and ended up being pipe against the firewall.
Also we had a ute at work that was very similiar that time it was an injector.
