What a pain this is without the right tool. I purchased several oil filter wrenches until I found the right one. There are sets of these available from the auto shops but this size is not in the set. I could only source it from eBay.
I have only used it on Nissan supplied filters, never tested it on other brands.
I use it with a 3/8 locking racket handle which locks the handle to the tool.
