on the weekend i was doing a far bit of 4x4 and noticed bad noises going down very steep hills in low range when i let it run above 2000rpm sounds like griding noises doesnt do it going uphill could anybody have an idea what it could be

Hey Craig,

Are we talking diesel or petrol? Manual or auto?

A diesel manual might just be engine braking. Is the "grinding" a high pitched squeal or a low pitched grumble?

I'm going to assume you've got a diesel, and therefore a manual. Could be a buggered thrust bearing - switch from drive to overrun (uphill to downhill) and you change the thrust direction of the helical cut gears in the gearbox/transfer, and you pressure a different set of thrust bearings.
