Hi all, we've been told to take out and remove the gauze filter out of the inlet banjo. Does this sound correct? It's actually deep inside the bolt.

This is the bolt which has a hole in the side of it to allow the fuel through but when we pulled it out yes there is a gauze filter in this bolt and yes there is a hole however it is a pin size hole on the side of this bolt how does this size possibly allow the fuel through?

White smoke at start up is usually failing glow plugs.
Does the smoke slowly disappear as it gets up to operating temp?
White smoke can either be water in the combustion chamber (accompanied by a steamy white exhaust)....or....if the fuel is almost completely unburned under low temp conditions, you'll get white smoke.

Heavy black smoke is also unburnt diesel but under different conditions.
