As Tony said, likely a CV joint getting tired.

It's not uncommon for the rubber boots to fail (happened on my Nav).
Once this happens water & dirt will get in there and start reducing the life of the joint.
It's nothing to panic about - I've seen buggered CV joints on hatch-backs go for years, making all sorts of horrible noises at full lock.
And you're not actually using your front CV's to drive the vehicle unless you're offroad.

Having said all that, a new complete axle is less than $400 for decent aftermarket. Or you can buy a boot kit and overhaul the axle yourself.
Steer clear of the really cheap chinese CV axles. You'll end up buying another axle too soon.
