Small update but no new news. Had the truck tilt trayed to the auto specialists today, they told me they have never seen a D40 Auto die unless there was a very obvious cause. Said they're a fairly good box and the fact that there was no warning, slipping etc would make it unlikely the box has died.

No time to look at it today so hopefully they will get to it tomorrow, until then I'm driving a VY Commodore V6. :deadhorse2:

Four words you never want to hear after something like this.

"We can't fault it".

Auto guys have been driving it around for a day or so now and no issues whatsoever. Going to service it tomorrow, new fluid and filter and see how it goes.

Be interesting to know what is causing the car to feel reluctant then. Binding brakes?

Possibly? Not sure. Ran out of time to pick it up today so I will check and see if anything was found in the pan etc when it was serviced. Logically if it is not the trans the brakes would be the next thing to look at, maybe a stuck caliper etc.

I had an issue with my rear brake shoes a year ago one of the shoes popped out of place and got caught in the drum.. But I'd still drive the car in reverse and see what happens..

Well the verdict is in, auto is fine. Asked for it to be serviced anyway.

Wheel bearing at the rear has broken and debris from that has caused a few problems leading to the brake shoe getting stuck. Hence the big bang and then off you go as normal.

So some new bearings, new shoes and clean up the drums and should be good as new. Still about $700 worth though.

Either way I am relieved the auto is fine.

Ouch....
A better than result than it looked like.
Still, you did lose all that auto fluid somewhere.

Yes that was a concern I had too, the auto guys tell me no signs of any leaks etc and that the cooler is fine also. It may have just been low but there were no obvious signs of it prior to this - no rough shifts etc.

Well picked it up on Saturday afternoon and all fixed.

Buuuuuuuuuuutt........

seems to be re-appearing again tonight, very sluggish on takeoff. Nowhere near as bad but something's not right. To make matters worse I have sold the car and it is being picked up on Saturday, and the original repairer has gone off on a fishing trip for 3 weeks.

Not sure what to do.

Haha! Might come to that.

Do drum brakes have to wear in or whatever? Just wondering if a few kms on it might help.

Some mechanics will try brake clean to clean oil off the shoes n it works in very very light cases. In most cases the oil surfaces again making a paste that grabs the drum.
Just get another mechanic to pull the drums off n check. More $ but you get nothing for a car that don't go.

10 points here, caught them out today. The 'mechanics' that apparently worked on the truck have gone away for easter, got another guy in to do some small repairs for them over the next few weeks. My truck had the problem again quite badly yesterday on my way back to work at lunchtime, rang them and told them about it and that I would be dropping it off - didn't actually mention what had been done previously.

Well didn't the new bloke put his foot in it when he told me 'your brake shoes are cactus' - interesting given they're meant to be brand new! After lots of backpedalling he finally admitted that maybe the work hadn't atcually been done like i was told and that it would definitely be done this time around. I suggested NSW Dept of Fair Trading would be very interested if that wasn't the case.

Funnily enough I know their boss has a D40 so i just wonder if the shoes I paid for first time around found their way into it instead of mine.

Just be sure it hasn't leaked again to stuff the new shoes. Its obvious though if the shoes in there aren't new.
