Bonnet protector how to install grrr

Hi all, I got myself a nice plastic bonnet protector today from Autobarn for my Spanish D40, but the instructions are not too clear on how to fit. It comes with plastic inserts that go in the holes vacated by the plugs that secure the rubber seal to the underside of the bonnet. They have an oblong raised part that I assume fits in the slot of the protector. The bit that goes into the bonnet does not seem long enough to go if it is put over the rubber, so I can assume then that they go straight into the bonnet. Does this mean that the rubber seal has to come off? Has anyone got any quick fix clues on how to do this, and stop the plugs turning around when trying to tighten them up?

On the factory unit the rubber seal goes over the bonnet protector so you pull out the clips then slide the protector in under the rubber and then replace the clips from memory
