Hi Fella's, first time posting on the form. I have a 2005 Nissan Navara D22 with the ZD30 motor.

I recently had a hi flow 3" turbo back exhaust instauled and a manual boost controller. I'm still bogging down a little when trying to take off while towing. After reading on here maybe blocking my EGR could help...?

So I just have a few quick questions regarding block the EGR.

I know this is a topic that's been brought up time and time again but I just want to know I'm doing the right thing.

My mechanic has recommended I don't block it because he believes it will cause a fault and send the computer in to limp mode. Reading on here makes me believe otherwise.

I plan on blocking it as close to the motor as possible to avoid any sensors picking up on any change in flow.

Is there anyone else that has blocked it and had issues? Or sent it into limp mode? Is limp mode reversible simply?

Wouldn't mind hearing a few more pro's to blocking the EGR. But any information would be helpful.

Cheers Nathan

Don't stress on a 2005 it will not read fault codes nor affect anything unless done incorrectly. Definitely do it, I've done it on my 2003 and did help a decent amount.

I dont think theres such a thing a limp mode on a d22, pros are less smoke, cooler intake temps, small power increase and a big f&$# you to the EPA haha

Thanks Scooba and Jaymac for the fast replies.

Seems my mechanic has poor knowledge in the area and feeding me incorrect information.

On your responses alone I plan on blocking my EGR tomorrow.

This forum will be my go to for any queries or questions I have in the future. Simple, easy and helpful.

Cheers for the info guys.

If your mechanic is not a Nissan specialist, then (s)he's giving the best general advice. There are modern engines where blocking the EGR totally can send a fault to the ecu, sending it to limp mode.

Hey scooba, correct me if I'm wrong but while blocking the EGR might reduce intake temps, I believe that it can actually increase exhaust temps. Am I wrong on this?

Mate.... To be honest, I don't think what u do will stop yours from bogging down when towing heavy loads.... it's more a poor gearing in 1st gear kinda thing. Why manufacturers plate their 4cyl TD utes to be able to tow 3T+ then have a HIGH 1st gear is beyond me. I would have thought common sense would come into play and have a good LOW 1st gear so u can get the vehicle up and moving at least when towing a heavy load (even in inclines) b4 changing into 2nd gear....Nissan not the only one as most manufacturers seem to do the same thing....It's crap designing in my opinion but people will have a differing opinion though.... This is why so many of these High Tech modern day 4cyl manual Diesels are burning out Clutches IMHO... If u want to tow heavy loads, either go Auto or buy a 6cyl or 8cyl..... unless u can find a good 4cyl diesel with a LOW 1st gear.......

just my thoughts though.....

Rob

Thanks Rob valid point. I agree with the gearing. It's rubbish. I think a little more R&D could be put into gearing from the manufactures.

I hear what your saying about get a bigger truck to do my towing. I have a 76series Cruiser for the majority of the towing but the D22 is for when I'm more than two up on a fishing trip towing the boat.

I'm going to give the EGR blanking a go and see what the results are myself. Then I can give a definitive answer to whether EGR blanking is a true benefit in towing. (I'm not holding my breath) Can't hurt to try though.

Pinelli your right my mechanic isn't a Nissan specialist. I really can't knock him he's giving me the best advice to his knowledge on the issue.

I'm glad you raised the possibility of increasing exhaust temp. That is something I am trying to avoid.

There seems to be a lot of confusion on whether blocking the EGR will send faults to the ECU and sending it into limp mode. Or whether the D22 can be sent into limp mode...

Mate, I did the EGR on mine, & I noticed a "little" more torque down low but not enough to fix the poor take-off. I did also notice the Turbo whistle a little more after the mod too......

Mines running a front mount intercooler; Ditronic Chip & a 2.75 exhaust and the car only has got 255/70/16 on it and I still have troubles taking off when the van is on the back up any sort of incline....

The ZD30 runs 50 degrees cooler at 100km/h with the EGR blocked.

Unless you have a chip pumping in ridiculous amounts of fuel, the increase in peak temp is sfa to worry about.

Finely got around to installing the blanking plate and redirecting the hoses. I just want to say for those who aren't too sure on the idea. Stop thinking about it just do it! I've noticed she idles smoother, turbo spools earlier, noticeable increase in torque, shuts off cleaner. Thus far I see no negatives only positives. Cheers to everyone for the advice I'll be having a beer for you all

I've had the EGR on my 05 zd30 blocked for 60 000 kms and never had a problem. Catch can on the rocker cover breather line is a good idea too.

Have a look at the pictures in this thread to see what the EGR does to the intake.

Thats actually pretty good (the truck in question) considering the km traveled before the catch can was installed.

this is a hilux d4d after just 120000km lol

EGR might improve emissions slightly but obviously isn't good for engine life. Manufactures probably figure they'll be out of warranty before problems occur= not their problem.
