how much oil should be getting into my intercooler i think the turbo is on the way out its starting to make a strange sound when i throttle off and theres a bit of play in the propeller. nissan nz quoted $2800nz for a new ht12-19b but reckons he can do it for $2000. tempted to leave it till it goes not many options over here. The picture is of the oil in the bottom of the intercooler

If there's play in the shaft, the bearings are gone. The bearings are fed oil from the engine. If the engine is shut down before the turbo has stopped spinning or while the turbo is still too hot, the bearings will suffer.

Turbo timers and EGT gauges are the saviour here.

I thought it could be blow-by as well, but that's a lot of oil and the shaft should not wobble one bit. Turbochargers spin at 60,000rpm up to about 160,000rpm depending on the model, and at those revs you can't have any shimmy without an eventual catastrophe.
