radio not workin

Just got a hand down uhf off my pop and its nothing special just a cheap dick smith thing thats pretty old. It came with an antenna but it needed to be tuned so i decided to buy a uniden pretuned one. Installed it the other day and connected it up and i still get nothing on every channel. Is there something im missing when installing antennas cos i just thought it was mount and go, or could the radio have shit itself?

It is possible that it's fried. Operating the unit with a poorly tuned antenna used to be fatal to the antenna circuit inside the radio. I'm not sure if newer units protect themselves from this sort of problem.
