vibration/shakes when taking off

hey im pretty new to this forum but you guys seem like a helpful bunch and im chasin some help.

so i drive a 1997 d22 navara and its developed quite a chronic vibration when taking off. it usually happens when im taking off up a hill from stop still. sometimes on flat ground too, so i guess its something to do with being under load? if im taking off up a decent hill , even with slow clutch release i will get a chronic vibration that causes the car to shake violently.

i took it to a local mechanic and he said probly gearbox mounts or centre bearing but clutch seems ok. so he replaced the gearbox mounts…still got the problem, then i replaced the centre bearing…still got the problem. the centre bearing has like 20mm of place if i push it, but considering i put a brand new bearing in this must be normal?

so basically i have no idea what the problem is and hopefully one of yous do! i attatched some vids to give a bit of an example but it doesnt really show how violent the vibration is.

Have you checked engine mounts? If they are OK I'd suspect clutch. It might not be dying but if it has hot spots on either the flywheel, pressure plate or clutch plate it will shudder on take off.

Depending on the km on it, if you don't know when the clutch may have last been done it may be worth changing it anyway. ..
 
20mm of play on the center bearing doesn't sound right, I'll check mine when I can to see what kind of play there is but I expect that something rotating and transferring torque shouldn't have much play at all, also possibly uni joints.
 
thanks for the replys guys. to bods, the mechanic who replaced the gearbox mounts said engine mounts are ok, he took it for a drive and reckons the clutch it ok. when im taking off, even when iv let the clutch fully out and accelerate in first it still can get real shaky so i suspect its no the clutch? i might be wrong tho..

fourocker, i thought the same thing about the play in the bearing but its brand new? iv heard about the tailshaft needing to be balanced so i guess ill take it to a shop and get a mechanic to do it cause i got no idea there.

that's way too much play in centre bearing
unless you can bench press 200kg and you have arms like arnie
ide be questioning the mechanic who replaced it

yeah thats what i thought, thats a brand new bearing i bought from online auto parts costing $38
 
I'd even say that's more than 20mm... That's ridiculous if that is really a new centre bearing...

It could still be the clutch, but as sparra said, I'd be questioning them on the centre bearing as that is way too much slop...

In second gear going around 20-30kph, engaging and disengaging the clutch there are no vibrations what so ever, same with all the other gears. eg if I dropped fourth to third to slow down it's pretty smooth engagement. And if the clutch was playing up wouldn't it jerk forward with fluctuations in the revs ?

I'd be looking at that centre bearing first, looking at that video they either didn't change it or it has had it already, which I find hard to believe...

Did you actually open it and look at it before you took the car in to get done? Maybe you got a dud one, but the mechanics should have noticed that when it was being fitted. Seems a bit sus to me...
 
the mechanic only did the gearbox mounts, I did the center bearing myself, bought it from online auto parts. probly gonna take it bak to the mechanic tho or a tail shaft specialist
 
Mate I have a 1998 D22 with the exact same problem, I also bought a centre bearing from the same place. Ive had my shaft balanced and that hasn't fixed the problem either though the dude did say it was a little bit out.

Get somebody to drive off in it while you are watching the behaviour of the centre bearing my moves like crazy

I think the common theme here is that bloody bearing. The only prblem is I rang nissan and they wanted like 200 bucks for the damn thing :S

But did they say it will stop the vibration? Cause I'd pay 200 to fix it
 
I've checked mine, it has 195, 000 k's on it, I can get it to flex slightly (they're designed to) maybe 5mm with both arms pushing and pulling pretty hard.
I've watched your vid and there is something very wrong with yours to the point of failure, I would get it to Nissan or a drive line specialist sooner rather than later, it will get more and more violent and when flogged enough will risk pulling the yoke out the back of the box.
 
I get massive flex on mine, Ive taken a video of it that im uploading now. Im pretty sure its not the bearing itself as the rubber seems to have similar properties to the original
 
just a question...was there any work done on the car at the same time as you first noticed the vibration? I work for a tailshaft mob and see a lot of shafts that are re assembled after some kind of work and the mechaics get the "phasing " wrong. that will mean that the shaft generates harmonics that you can feel under load.

go to a tailshaft shop and get them to check the phase... and centre bearing if you are unhappy with it as well. could even be a uni at the back of the shaft. recommend hardy spicer as they tend to balance to a finer value.....and yes I work for them
 
In my particular instance phasing is not an issue, the front and back flanges of the second half are in phase. I have had the two piece shaft off and balanced by a proper drive shaft balancing company. I dont believe the issue is there.

Here is the bearing, I have taken a video facing back at the diff and there is quite a bit of movement I suspect the problem might be related to that. It could also be the front uni though as its relative angle is actually up towards the rear relative to the gearbox angle.
 
Wow great video, you can clearly see the tail shaft is rubbing fairly often, there's a mark on it, is that a non genuine centre bearing ?
 
Yeah that is why I dont think its out of balance(apart from the fatc I have had it balanced), there is just enough movement under load that the shaft hits my long range tank which sits lower than normal(I think) and then vibrates.

I was driving it pretty hard in that video though.

The bearing is non genuine. Got it from online auto parts just like jimorna

there is massive amounts of movement upwards. Im tempted to put in some shims to angle the diff downwards and reduce the amount of upwards movement.

I also have a replacement transmission mount in the hope that that is the problem as it looks like there is a bit of movement up front.
