When a big tyre is too big?

Ah bugger, it seems to have dissapeared. Basically the argument was won by the taller, skinnier tyre on pretty much all surfaces except bottomless mud or snow. The forces generated by the smaller footprint are greater per cm2, than a wider tyre spread out over a larger area. More pressure = more grip. In the mud situation, the taller tyre would be likely to keep the car higher and has a better chance of getting purchase on the dry stuff under the mud. Unless of couse it is too deep in which case the wider footprint will help the car "float". I know, big wide tyres look a heap better, but in actual fact, when it comes to ability, the skinnier version of the same diameter tyre will give better performane in most circumstances. Comparison was on 33" tyres.
