Adding 2-Stroke oil to Diesel

i am pretty sure the zd30 needs at least 45 cetane diesel and the later d22 with the common rail and the d40 as well (same pumps same injectors) need at least 50 cetane. my job has nothing to do with chemistry so i have no idea why higher cetane is better etc, but from my personal experience if you are using a good brand of diesel (like bp, shell around here is considered garbage fuel) and above all the guy who supplies your diesel doesnt go monkey mode blending the fuels or add water etc to steal your money you will be fine. personally i refill at the same station 9/10 and get the same consumptions and never had power loss. some years ago i filled up at a monkey store and truck wouldnt start because the "diesel" was 5% actual fuel and 95% water. biodiesel is a % on every fuel sold nowadays. personally i am not too conserned about it. never added 2 stroke oils or bothered with "add this cleaner to the tank and your pump will be brand new!" products and truck runs more than perfect. same on our d40 when injectors started to get noisy we just removed them sent them to a bosch specialist he cleaned them up and away we went. sometimes overcommiting is a bad thing.

I've never looked at all 75 pages but just a thought. A few service day's in the 80's with Castrol that worked on 2 stroke oil was that it's composition was designed to blend/mix with petrol. As diesel is quiet the opposite, has it ever been discussed as to it's ability to mix with the diesel in the same way as petrol?.

yep, it mixes better into diesel than petrol.
however the catch is that you must not use synthetic oil as that will not mix well.

That makes sense when you look at it like that, I often wondered why mineral based was the preferred drop.
Cheers

Only having a guess but the combustion temperatures in a diesel engine may not be high enough for the synthetic oil to burn completely.

Even in 2 stroke engines, synthetic is generally not recommended unless it's a high performance 2 stroke engine like in Hi-Po bike or outboard boat engine.

They (Nissan dealer) recommended full synthetic in DPF-equipped engines so that the ash content is reduced. Ash = heavy particulates that when combusted (entry via PCV into intake manifold) poisons the DPF. I've used fully synthetic oil since I bought the car and I've never had an issue with the DPF. I know there's been a fair bit of blow-by, I cleaned a lot of oil out of my intercooler and a fair amount had to be making its way into the engine.

I wonder what the flashpoint of synthetic 2-stroke oil is?

The main manufacturers usually have a PDF available for tech specs. I recently looked up the 2t im using in my mazda rotary - Motul 800 - flashpoint a whopping 250c or there abouts. Motul 710, also synthetic - about half that. Most 2t oils seemed to be anywhere between 80 and 200., engine oils seem to be much higher towards 400c. Ive got no idea how flashpoint affects things as they vary so wildly between different oils and everyone seems to have their favorites with good results. The spark plugs are clean and dry in the rotary running Motul 800 (250c)and engine oil injection (400c) - Other favorites are Sthil which is possibly the same as the Castrol Active that has been mentioned a few times in this thread.
Not going to pretend to know much about it, my gut feeling is pretty much everything burns anyway lol,
here is the PDF for active 2t;

Castrol Activ 2T is my choice of 2-stroke when I am in the mood to add it to my tank. That's a fairly low flashpoint - it means that it's going to burn when it's hit by the 500C+ in the combustion chamber.

yeah, at least the injectors and pump get some sweet lovin though. Probably couldnt hurt the DPF too much either? *shrug*

Just had a quick look at engine oil flash points - the two im using at the mo - penrite hpr30 and hpr diesel - both around 220c. I dont know where i got 400 from - must have got farenheits and celcius' mixed up.

Just though i would give you guys a quick update.
I've done one tank with 2 stroke mixed at 200:1.
What i have noticed is that the injectors and pump are heaps quieter when cold and a little quieter when at operating temperature.
The car seems to be driving smoother overall.
And egts seem slightly down, maybe 30 degrees or so?
I'll keep going with it for another tank or two and see what happens.
