I reckon there is a need for not using blue text in your post but that's not really going to help you choose a ute.

Gee thanks Gus your service is superb however I didn't expect it. Maybe there should be Nav.asia sunnies as well as stubby holders and stickers, it's too late for Dion but he'd be happy knowing someone else's eyes were saved I'm sure.

... and service with smile too

I don't believe other diff ratios are available for the front diff and SASing the D40 is big job but possible of course.

whats to say you need to sas it to fit a bigger front diff?. Theres a guy on 4wda trying to fit a bigger front diff in his d40 atm.

All this talk about Nav's keeping up with cruisers and patrols... yeah sure, for touring, otherwise i hope your tray is full of cv's.
It really comes down to what you want to do with it, 95% of the tracks in aus are probably doable with a 2/3" lift and 31/33" tyre. The problem comes down when you want to start doing that other 5%... and just so you know, 100 series front diffs are considered weak.

Joshy

I have been reading that post on 4WDA with interest.

As for keeping up with cruisers and patrols it is the deep ruts that let the Nav down - especially deep 'tram tracks'. My bash plate simply hangs up with the two front wheels unable to gain traction. Other than I would agree that I can keep up with them in most other situations.

Larger wheels would surely go some distance to alleviating this, Gus. Might put your speedo and odometer out, and give you a slower takeoff, but since you're unlikely to contemplate a tour around LeMans with the Navara, that's less of an issue. You're making a small sacrifice to overcome a large obstacle.

So the virtuous circle continues... I have two choices get a bigger ute or fit a larger suspension lift so that bigger tyres can be fitted. I know there are posts on this but what about a body lift too?

We know a body lift would help the larger tyres clear the guards. It may also help your approach and departure angles. Why not? It could also keep your doors out of the muck if it gets a little too damp.

Yup I am going to go and have a chat to the boys at Alltrac 4WD. They specialise in chassis and suspension modifications to 4WDs here in Adelaide. Not only will they be able to assist with my suspension and possible body lift but they also do GVM upgrades so I am assuming they can shed some light on my apparent 'chassis flex' issue. I need that sorted before I do anything.

I am selling/trading my Nav for the same reasons as you. I've spent a fair bit of cash on mine trying to improve it for offroad work, 3" suspension lift 1.5 inch bodylift, 265/75 muddies and air locker. But the facts are it's too low, too long and too weak to ever be a decent 4WD.

I'm doing one more big trip, Melb-Coffin Bay-Googs trak-Flinders Ranges- Melb in Novemeber. And hopefully get a good deal for the end of year sales.
On my short list is a Patrol, Defender, or a JK Jeep. They all have faults, so it's going to be a hard decision.
