Bash plates

Just got my automatic transmission serviced and the mechanic commented on my bash plate covering the transmission pan. He said the bash plate is restricting air flow and therefore cooling effect and recommended I take it off. I know the autos can get hot but you still need to protect them. What are you guys running.

Wouldn't running an external tranny cooler negate that? I got the ironman plates on mine and run an external tranny cooler to assist with temp. No probs so far.
