I always get to my filter from the top you just have to plan the route and its easy.. never removed my plates for a oil change.. hope this helps

I had a look today and the oil filter faces up, and is half way up the motor.
It's easily assessable from the engine bay, actually you wouldnt want to get to the oil filter from the bottom.
