go tubo first I say- less bolts and hassles than removing the head ! I owned a rage rover once that ran fine but had a knock tap rattle at times, anyways on compression check one of the cylinders was down. removed as she had oil leaks as well and no 8 piston was broken "yep" ran fine -idled well ! the boar was so worn that the sleave had a deep egg shaped worn spot- the top of the piston was completely broken away from the oil ring- yupp oil ring pieces stuck in the piston and head lol and the thing still ran - if it wasn't for the oil leaks I would have left it in the car lol oh and 3-4 grand for a timing chain kit and replacement my arse ! do it yourself buddy !

Timing chains very rarely give trouble, they're designed to last the life of the engine. Unless they're common to @#$% up like YD25's are.

Any uncommon noises ?

If not, go for the electronics side of the engine..
