The seal around the tailgate wont be your issue, the tailgate itself will the issue, check out the gaps between the panels when the tailgate is shut and you'll quickly realise sealing isn't a huge issue. there is measures you can take to fix that but Nissan don't seem to mind it.
I've never had a canopy that sealed perfectly from the install, it usually takes some refinement to get right but under most circumstances they seal pretty well against everything but direct water pressure and the seal on the back door is usually pretty good.
