Hi all.
I drive a 2008 d40 which hunts a bit at times when cold after starting. Does anyone know if this is related to the common timing chain issues with this model. It has also at times fired and run for a second or two then stops, it keeps doing this until you turn the ignition off and let everything reset. It sounds a bit rattlier than when I first got it 18 months ago. We had another in our fleet that spat the timing chain at 120,000km a few months back.

I had those symptoms plus a couple of other problems with my 2007 40, i replaced the SCV and all good now.

Yep sounds like the Suction Control Valve. Had the the same problem in my truck just recently.
Being a little lazier than kevvp^ I put a tin of Liqui Molly fuel system cleaner and conditioner to 70lts. of fuel and has been good- so far. In fact, runs smoother overall.

I had the exact same symptoms but not at the same time.

I believe the start then run for a few seconds then stall issue was related to an ill-fitted fuel filter introducing air bubbles into the line. I didn't have my SCV replaced, but did have the car serviced (and I doubt they replaced the SCV, but they would have replaced the fuel filter).

The hunting was resolved by putting a couple of cans of LiquiMoly Injector Cleaner through the tanks. This will assist in cleaning all parts that the diesel will reach - pump, SCV and injectors.

A cleaner would be worth a try, unfortunately it didn't help mine, after speaking to a couple of specialists (including Paul at YD25 who was most helpful) i was told that the SCV can and does wear out, i pulled the old one apart and it didn't seem to be noticeably dirty but there was a bit of wear.

I have an 08 Navara 200,000+ kms and had the same problem, my problem was the primer bulb was faulty and soft, wasn't holding the fuel in the line, try checking that!

welcome Roadrage, and fair call on a possible solution.
