Mate, sounds the same as mine did.'spain built 07 d40 At 130 ks snapped timing chain, busted valves etc. cost $5000 to fix.

Look at the dual row timing chain upgrade kit $1600 plus fitting all up about $2500-$3000, sounds pricey but better than the $5000 I just shelled out. It's running as could as ever now, but very unimpressed. I've read 100-120 thousand K's seems to be the magic no. I'd get it looked at by a engine specialist rather then a run of the mill mechanic

Mine had a horrid rattle, traced it down to one of the plastic pipes going into the air box, have temporarily fixed it with fishing twine.

Yeah was just chatting with the lads at work. It literally at this stage could be anything. Every time I have a mate over with the bonnet up it doesn't make the noise. Very frustrating haha

It could be a number of little things in the engine.
Could be a sticky lifter awaiting to build up oil pressure.
Could be what Kernel said:
The timing chain uses a hydraulic tensioner, so surely it is possible that the 'loose' chain will rattle for a couple of seconds sometimes until the oil pressure comes up ?
The water on the belts is a interesting one, I don't have a 2.5ltr anymore to try it but if people have experienced it then try it.
Another common one for D40 is the bonnet rubbers, my old one rattled on start up, just screw them out a bit to put more tension on the bonnet.

If your really worried about the timing chain take it to a good mechanic to have a listen. (NOT NISSAN)

Well...was a lovely night out last night so I decided to crack on and find this noise. Turned out to be the angle of my IC had moved slightly allowing it to make contact over bumps/rough roads with the radiator support. All fixed now.

But on another note, I busted one of my IC clamps and didn't have a spare. So with my EGR blanking plate back in and a previous boost leak fixed...I now have another haha. Will sort it today.
