learner driver in other states

Howdy all. Am planning a drive from Sydney through broken hill up to Birdsville then through Longreach to the coast. My son is keen on doing some of the driving and i was told that some states have a different laws for learners ? Does any one know if this is true. I will check the states websites , when I get a spare couple of hours.
