Do you have a chip installed?

If not, take it to Nissan they will check the fault codes to find out whats going on, hopefully for your sake nothing major like the injector pump. I think there 5K to replace.

Welcome to the forum!

If the engine is going into limp mode it should also be displaying the CEL (Check Engine Light).

If it's not displaying that, then it might be another issue. There are some things that need to be checked first, and since they're free and easy we should start there.

I'd pop the air filter out and check that first - at full throttle, it needs a lot of air, and a mostly-blocked air intake is going to give you the exact symptom you describe (including, possibly lighting the CEL because the MAF - Mass Air Flow - sensor detects insufficient air, and the O2 sensor in the exhaust senses an over-rich operation.

Your fuel pump might be having an issue with air in the line. Reduced rail pressure will result in not enough fuel delivery when the fuel demand is high (full throttle) also giving you the same symptoms. If you're recently had the fuel filter out, and didn't change the seals, this might be your culprit. One of your fuel lines may have developed a crack or two (I'd guess on the intake, or low-pressure side, or you'd be pumping fuel all over the place). This will cause air to be sucked into the fuel system.

You might also have a dirty fuel filter. Have you tried using bio-diesel recently? Have you purchased fuel from a small servo that doesn't supply to trucks? Truck stops are best for buying diesel from, as they have high turnover and their livelihood depends on their fuel not causing problems, so GENERALLY you'll find truck stops are far more reliable to buy fuel from.

There's a start, anyway.

Chipped diesel D40s under hard acceleration have been known to go into limp mode. The problem is a lack of fuel in the rail. There is an easy fix for it.

I spoke to a deisel specialist the other day about having the same issue. He reckoned that the "high Pressure fuel pump suction control valve" is the cause and that nissan are aware of it. Apparently Nissan were aware of this and they modified it in 09 models onwards. I took my nav into nissan and as i expected there was no fault code as the CEL light did not light up. They wanted to have my truck for a couple of days to try and fault it. Like yoursef mine does it occasionally but is easily reset by turning the ignition off and then back on. I will question them when i go back to nissan to get my steering wheel plastic trim replaced next week.

Yep mine has done it 3 or 4 times now. All after my chip has been put in and all under heavy acceleration (revs over 3500-4000rpm). If i slowy build up speed to overtake its fine, but if I put my foot down and it drops back a gear or two, thats when it will happen.

Well i fronted Nissan about the suction control valve thingy and they admitted there was a problem......but because when my Nav goes into limp mode without illuminating the Check Engine Light and is not recording a fault code they will not replace it unless it is logged.

Anyone know any short cuts with this?

Well I suppose technically they are right, if there is no recorded error they have nothing to base their repairs on but if they have admitted that the car goes into limp mode without the CE light coming on then I would think that that is an issue they need to fix, then any error related to that should be fixed in accordance with the first fix.

Do it in the fridge were the light comes on each time you open the door.

Personally I don't need the light I can hit the kitchen sink without any help.

Is the Check Engine Light (CEL) coming on at all?

If it is NOT, Nissan may have difficulty handling the problem.

If the CEL comes on, the ECU will have a fault code that they can read to determine the problem.

It might still be an off-spec sensor on the fuel rail, or the MAF (airflow) sensor. Both have caused trouble in the past.

Try having a look at the suction control valve on the back of the high pressure pump this is normally the cause of this problem
