I'm making my own recovery brackets using 10mm 100x100 angle to take a hook and a shackle.
Just wondering if I need to make the holes big enough to take a 4 3/4t or if a 3 1/4t shackle would be enough.

I would go the larger option. Just with the unknown force- being snatched out of the mud say, i think bigger wouldn't bend/break as easy. Just make sure there fitted well using high tensile bolts and there shouldn't be a problem.
Probally be another story if your winching - not the same shock force applied to everything

Have the 2 captive nuts in the chassis and will drill a hole and put another bolt or 2 into the current tow point, all 8.8 bolts.
I don’t have much faith in the 2 nuts already in the chassis not to rip out under snatch load

Yep have seen people rip out the recovery points sold commercial which are painted yellow (roadsafe?) I have used the exact same design and have that third bolt through the bullbar/tie down point and havent had issues. Mind you I have done any massive snatches for being bogged in mud and I always use an equaliser strap across broth recovery hooks

Final (apart from paint) product, m12 /1.25 8.8 bolts into the chassis captive nuts with split washers, m10 8.8 bolts with nyloc nuts into original tiedown points for additional support and strength. 25mm hole for upto 4 3/4t shackles and ridge ryder 4500kg hooks.

Id say the weakest point will always be the chassis so its best to use an equaliser strap to spread the load.

Your hooks might cop a bit of a flogging in the rough stuff as they sit out a bit.

The bolts are all high tensile 8.8 rated.
Have an equaliser strap that I plan on using should (when) i get stuck, also have more steel & looked at making new brackets so the hooks can be mounted at a better angle that is less likely to dig in. These are really just temporary until I can get a winch bar and winch, just have a hand winch till then. Best way to learn how to not get stuck is to recover yourself with one of those I reckon
